GCFC met with the British Ambassador to the UAE and representatives from various embassies, including the US, Germany, France, and others, to explore how GCFC is advancing the agenda of climate finance, especially in developing nations. The UK’s leadership in areas like de-risking mechanisms and innovative finance solutions is key to driving tangible results and unlocking much-needed capital for sustainable development. GCFC was honored to participate in the "Africa's Climate Future" event, organized by Invest Africa Ltd and hosted by ADG Legal in #Dubai. With Africa receiving only 2% of global #climatefinance, there is a significant gap to bridge in driving its development, energy transition, and green industrialization. Key insights from the panel discussion included: - Increasing downstream clean energy off-take through B2B and off-take agreements. - Addressing the disparity between perceived and actual risks. - The critical role of blended finance in lowering the cost of capital. - Mitigating risk across the project life cycle to ensure consistent returns. - Leveraging a regional lens for projects (e.g., SADC) to enhance scale and reduce risk. - Scaling de-risking instruments to tackle political and FX risks. The Global Climate Finance Centre (GCFC), serving as the Secretariat for the Global Climate Finance Framework (GCFF), launched at COP28 UAE with 15 countries representing 40% of the world’s GDP, participated in the 2nd Global Climate Finance Roundtable at #NYCW24. This event, co-organized by #IHLEG & #UNFCCC, brought together diverse agendas, including proponents of the #BridgetownInitiative, #4P, and #V20 on the road to #COP29 and #COP30. Discussions centered on tracking and monitoring progress, with the Climate Finance Reform Compass—based on the GCFF 10 principles and developed by Climate Policy Initiative —standing out as a significant contribution.

At the #B20 event "Building the New Climate Economy: Catalyzing Private Sector Innovation and Finance for Climate Champions," we underscored the pivotal role of the private sector in driving the global transition to a low-carbon, climate-resilient future. With an estimated USD 5 - 8.5 trillion needed annually by 2030, private sector innovation and finance are more critical than ever. The Global Climate Finance Centre (GCFC) is at the forefront of this effort, establishing a business-friendly climate finance hub in the UAE. With initiatives like the $30 billion ALTÉRRA Fund, the $4.5 billion Africa Green Investment Initiative and the commitment from the UAE banking sector to mobilize $272 billion in sustainable finance by 2030, we're creating actionable strategies to mobilize the billions needed for climate finance, particularly for emerging markets and developing economies (EMDEs). We're committed to bridging the financial gap, aligning systems and frameworks, and ensuring that climate finance is not only available but also affordable and accessible to those who need it most. At #NYCW24, the Innovate for Climatetech (I4C) secretariat - launched at COP28 UAE and now hosted by GCFC, officially convened its first working group session on "Unlocking project financing for emerging technologies". The I4C working group is being led by Dr. Tod Hynes of the Martin Trust Center for #MIT Entrepreneurship and is focused on paving a pathway toward commercial scalibility for the emerging climate technologies we need today. There is much to learn from the lessons of mature climate technologies like solar and wind, that can help us overcome the climatetech 'valley of death'. GCFC supports this mission and is dedicated to accelerating #climatetech deployment, especially in emerging markets where it's needed most. During his participation at #UNGA, HE Abdulla Balalaa, Assistant Minister for Energy and Sustainable Affairs, met with Barbara Buchner, Global Managing Director of Climate Policy Initiative (CPI), Mercedes Vela Monserrate, CEO of the Global Climate Finance Center (GCFC), Amar Bhattacharya, Executive Secretary of the Independent High-Level Expert Group (IHLEG) on Climate Finance, and the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF) to discuss the Climate Finance Reform Compass. This initiative aims to establish clear, actionable goals for advancing the Global Climate Finance Framework launched at COP28. The Framework provides a comprehensive vision to reshape climate finance, focusing on unlocking investment potential in climate action. The Climate Finance Reform Compass represents the first effort to systematically track progress across the international financial ecosystem—by governments, public and private financial institutions, and supporting stakeholders—on commitments to tangible socio-economic impacts. GCFC, hosting the secretariat for the Africa Green Investment Initiative launched at the 2023 Africa Climate Summit in Nairobi, participated in the inaugural Steering Committee meeting of Kenya’s Africa Green Industrialization Initiative at #UNGA. This initiative, launched at COP28, aims to accelerate and scale green industries and businesses across Africa, promoting climate mitigation, adaptation, and fostering green economic growth. The meeting highlighted the ambitious goals, economic opportunities, and the growing need for collaboration across the continent. Partners and champions shared their vision on governance structures, potential roadblocks, and the importance of identifying priority clusters to present at COP29 in Baku. We are pleased to announce our proposed acquisition of Saeta Yield, leading independent developer, owner and operator of renewable power assets in #Spain and #Portugal with capabilities across the entire value-chain, from Brookfield Asset Management.
