🌍 ISOPS XI: A Global Gathering for Phlebotomine Sandfly Research 🦟
From September 9-13, 2024, leading scientists from 27 countries gathered in Portorož, Slovenia for the 11th International Symposium on Phlebotomine Sandflies (ISOPS XI).
The event focused on advancing research on climate change’s impact on ecosystems and vector-borne diseases like leishmaniasis.
💡 The event gathered 111 participants, representing countries from around the world to discuss on vector biology, disease prevention, and innovative control strategies
🔹 On September 12 the CLIMOS project featured a session chaired by Ozge Erisoz Kasap, highlighted the growing threat of sand fly-borne diseases, worsened by climate change. Researchers shared insights on vector competence, detection techniques for Leishmania and Phlebovirus, and innovative prevention tools like semiochemical attractants and an Early Warning System. The session emphasized climate-driven strategies and collaboration.
🔹 On September 13, sessions chaired by Vít Dvořák where Eduardo Berriatua featured studies on sand fly distributions in Spain. Another session, chaired by Yusuf Ozbel, featured Katharina Platzgummer's presentation on the trajectory of sand fly research in Central Europe reinforcing the need for prevention strategies.
Big thanks to the Organizing Committee, including Vladimir Ivovic, and ozge erisoz kasap for bringing this incredible event to life! See you in 2028 at ISOPS XII in Bonito, Brazil! 🇧🇷
