Last week was pretty dang cool. I had the honor of sitting on the mainstage panel for DataConnect Conference to speak about AI alignment - AND I got to do my first-ever major book signing thanks to Women in Analytics (WIA) - AND I got to exchange signed book copies with Dr. Joy Buolamwini 😮 But, I have to say, the coolest part to the conference had nothing to do with what happened on stage, and instead everything to do with the people I met behind the scenes... As I sat backstage in the speakers' lounge waiting for my session, I had the chance to swap stage stories with a group of seasoned female speakers in AI when a first-time speaker asked what advice we would give to our younger selves. Surprisingly, we were unanimous in our answer: Drop the damn persona. We had all begun our speaking careers with the idea that we needed a stage persona, something completely separate and distant from who we were as individuals. However, as time went on and we gained experience in this space, it became clear that it was this very persona that was getting in the way of our success. Even in the age of AI, people don't connect with fancy powerpoint slides, witty catchphrases, and flashy examples of new tech - people connect with people. So, even though it can be terrifying to step out on stage without a persona to hide behind, remember that at the end of day, we are all just humans looking for a little real connection.
