It’s been said that everything becomes an ad network, eventually. The same seemingly applies to retail media – everyone’s eyeing a slice of Australia’s circa $1.5bn market. Cartology - Part of the Woolworths Group boss Mike Tyquin and Coles 360's Paul Brooks suggest the arrivistes may not have what it takes and WARC’s Gregory Grudzinski forecasts consolidation ahead for those lacking scale, particularly as off-site revenues ramp up, with retailers chasing greater revenue by partnering with CTV and social platforms, per Diageo's Roger Dunn. The challenge for that approach is just how far looming privacy regime change – landing in parliament next month – curbs current practices.

Almost 18 months on from its belated official move into the bustling retailer media sector – and widespread calls from brands and suppliers for retail media networks to ‘close the loop’ on advertising’s ‘causality’ to customer purchases – Coles 360 briefed 250 suppliers last week on a measurement platform it has custom-built with global retail data specialist, Circana.
