The first goal in treating a cut is to get the bleeding under control. To do that, apply pressure to the wound until the bleeding stops. (It shouldn’t take more than a few minutes.) Then, thoroughly rinse the area with warm, soapy water. It’s best not to use rubbing alcohol or hydrogen peroxide, which can slow healing. Apply a bit of antibiotic ointment and cover the cut with a bandage until a scab forms. Using a lotion with vitamin E can help prevent scarring.🧴🩹

It was an “Enchanted evening” filled with sparkly dresses, bow ties, corsages… and of course, music.✨ Around 100 teen patients from Cleveland Clinic Children’s, UH Rainbow Babies and Akron Children’s hospitals came together this weekend to dance the night away at the Enchanted Evening Dunkin Oncology Prom! An event made possible by a grant from the Dunkin’ Joy in Childhood Foundation. Patients and their dates enjoyed a magical evening filled with dancing, crafts and delicious food. Our facility dogs, Kid and Trotter, also attended the big event. They were not “officially” crowned prom king and queen… but they certainly have our vote!👑

If your child is stung by a bee, expect a few tears, as well as pain, itchiness, redness and swelling around the site of the sting. Symptoms often last for a day or two. It’s not unusual for signs of irritation to extend across a wider area, too. (A sting near an ankle can lead to swelling up the leg, for instance.)🐝 In rare cases, bee stings may lead to anaphylaxis, a severe allergic reaction that demands immediate emergency treatment. If your child has allergies to other things (such as pollen and dust) or has asthma, it might be worth talking to your pediatrician about allergy testing during bee season.👩⚕️

When it’s hot out, there’s an increased risk for active children to develop a heat rash, especially if they’re playing outside, overdressed for the weather or wearing clothes that don’t allow their skin to breathe. These factors may increase the amount of sweat on your child’s skin, which then increases the chance of a heat rash developing.
