CHEERS CLC EU Horizon 2020

CHEERS project update: The world’s largest Chemical Looping Combustion unit successfully completed its pilot phase. A 6-year Sino-European joint research and development project on #CO2capture via chemical looping combustion (CLC), comes to its final stages as partners share the results from the pilot phase as of March 2024. The CHEERS fully constructed CLC demonstration unit brings the CO2 capture technology closer to commercialisation. A successful collaboration between Chinese and European partners saw rapid construction and further understanding of the CLC technology at the 3 MWth scale. The demonstration unit, started in June 2023, identified, assessed and overcame technical challenges to ensure continuous operation and a better expertise of the CLC process. Through the efforts of the operational team: Dongfang, IFPEN, TotalEnergies and Tsinghua University, autothermal Chemical Looping Combustion operation with Lignite and Petcoke feedstock was successfully performed for several days, with ilmenite natural ore as oxygen carrier. From this successful trial, the main results are a #carboncapture efficiency of 90-94% for lignite feedstock and 50-75% for petcoke feedstock.  📑🔗 All results can be found in the deliverable D6.4 available in the CHEERS website: https://lnkd.in/ex5b-sNW
