Bioindustry 4.0
Biotechnology Research
Research Infrastructure services to promote deep digitalization of Industrial Biotechnology and smart biomanufacturing
About us
Industrial Biotechnology (IB) is a Key Enabling Technology for the circular bio-economy, industrial renewal and European manufacturing autonomy. Its development forms a vital part of EU’s strategy to become climate neutral in 2050. For IB to become a major manufacturing technology, it must widen its use of advanced digital technologies. These will improve R&D efficiency, reducing time-to-market and costs. Moreover, for manufacturing, advanced digital technologies will drive distributed, autonomous and highly adaptable production systems. To support digitalization of IB, the Horizon Europe project BIOINDUSTRY 4.0 will create new services delivered by European research infrastructures (RI). These services will address several challenges, focusing on the acceleration of bio-process development pipelines. Drawing on the complementary skills of its consortium, BIOINDUSTRY 4.0 will develop data-driven approaches, exploiting AI to empower novel decision support systems and digital twins, the latter being to better design bio-processes and enable their real-time online control. To complete these services, BIOINDUSTRY 4.0 will also develop data and metadata standards to generate high quality, interoperable multi-scale bio-process data, the technical basis for trusted data networks and process analytical devices to provide real-time online monitoring of bio-processes. Once deployed, these RI services will provide Users with access to cutting-edge technologies that can be used singly or in an integrated way, covering whole R&D pipelines. Integrated services will be delivered by a distributed RI, conferring Europe with a unique R&D test-bed for bio-process development and a competitive advantage with respect to global competition. BIOINDUSTRY 4.0 brings together 6 EU RIs, 1 global company, 2 innovative EU SMEs and several research teams around an ambitious 4-year workplan that will be implemented in consultation with IB stakeholders, using a co-design strategy to specify goals.

The #EUResearchArea conference is ongoing. Early morning debate is on financing #research and #innovation. I am unsure whether the 3% GDP target for #EU is meaningful or not. However, I am convinced that our approach to R&I must change. Our approach to research must better valorize risk-taking. Many research programmes encourage timid research activities combined with over strict, ill-adapted financial monitoring. This discourages creativity and makes #EU #science careers less attractive. In France we are priviliged to currently benefit from funding to experiment with high risk-high reward research. The #explorae (https://explorae.inrae.fr) programme operated by INRAE is currently providing researchers from all career stages opportunities to explore ideas in a more flexible research-friendly framework. At a time when European governments are preparing new budgets, let's hope that the value of innovative high risk-high reward programmes are recognized and pursued.

📅 Sep 25, 4pm Looks like a very exciting webinar dealing with modelling techniques and the bioeconomy - and EV Biotech will also release its new strain engineering assistant Optistrain!
I have recently been asked, "How do you use your voice?" 🗣 And in all fairness, as an #introvert and #neurodivergent the answer is "scarcely and quietly". I use my voice mostly in more private settings, internally with my team, or in 1:1 conversations, where I feel safe and heard. But on rare occasions, you can hear me loud and clear in public. That is when I feel strongly about a topic that is being discussed, and I believe that my voice can meaningfully contribute to taking action, teaching, or empowering others. I want to drive the change, not just fill the air with noise. And now, there comes a rare moment, when I feel again bold enough to speak up. In the upcoming webinar for the bioeconomy organised by EV Biotech in collaboration with, Synonym, Arxada, and Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant, together with other panellists we will focus on: - how #modelling can speed up the #commercialization of #bioproducts, - what are the different types of purpose-driven models that assist in scaling up #industrial #bioprocesses, - and also, on current models' shortcomings. Why do I care? I strongly believe that in order to make the #circular #economy a reality now, not in 20 years, we need to use the most up-to-date tools, including digital ones, to de-risk, and speed up the introduction of #bioprocesses on a global scale. 📅 Date: September 25, 2024 🕒 Time: 4pm to 5:30pm CET 📍 Sign up for the webinar here: https://lnkd.in/eCqmmf6j The webinar is part of the 12th edition of the #EuropeanBiotechWeek, a week-long (from 24 September to 1 October 2024) series of events aiming at making #biotech accessible to everyone and showing how it surrounds and supports us in everyday life (more at www.biotechweek.org). https://lnkd.in/duH6bf6k. Check out this video clip from https://lnkd.in/dM3zUeVj. It is a nice reminder (or primer for those that don't know) that #biotechnology is both a familiar, versatile and powerful. Its familiar because Humans have been using it for thousands of years, versatile because it can be used for so many purposes (food, fuels, pharma products etc) and powerful because when combined with the latest digital technologies, it becomes a gamechanging #manufacturing technology that can help #Europe #researchimapactEU to achieve its sustainability targets . Thanks to contributions from its partners, especially #research #infrastructures IBISBA, MIRRI - Microbial Resource Research Infrastructure , Leibniz Institute DSMZ – German Collection of Microorganisms and Cell Cultures, BBMRI-ERIC and ELIXIR Bioindustry 4.0 is striving to deliver digital enhanced biotechnology.

🚀 The future of biotech looks promising with the integration of digital technology! 🚀 As we already posted yesterday: we're thrilled to share an insightful interview featuring Michael O'Donohue and our project Bioindustry 4.0 by Anthony King from Horizon Magazine. The piece explores how digital technology is unlocking new potentials in biotechnology, from creating eco-friendly industrial processes to producing high-quality proteins sustainably. 🌱🔬 By integrating advanced digital technologies, Bioindustry 4.0 and all the research infrastructures involved in the project are working together to advance Europe's position in the biotech sector, fostering sustainable industrial processes and driving biotech innovation towards a greener, more efficient future. That's also why so many research infrastructures are involved in the project -the article mentions IBISBA by name, but we're also proud to count BBMRI-ERIC, Leibniz-Institut DSMZ-Deutsche Sammlung von Mikroorganismen und Zellkulturen GmbH, Gaia-X Association for Data and Cloud (AISBL), ELIXIR, and MIRRI - Microbial Resource Research Infrastructure as part of our valuable project team. https://lnkd.in/dG8qwGwH
