Warehouse Safety Checklist

Warehouse Safety Checklist

Warehouse safety should be the number one priority in any warehouse. Actively reducing hazards and adhering to Australian workplace standards will ensure your staff have a safe working environment and keep your facility running efficiently.

Here’s a quick safety checklist to determine if there are any areas for improvement in your warehouse.

1.      Are warehouse aisles clear?

Keeping the warehouse clean and tidy, not only reduces hazards, it keeps your work area clear for materials handling equipment to move without obstruction. It will also ensure all walkways and fire exists are clear so that in the event of an emergency, your staff are able to evacuate safely.

2.      Do you have warehouse processes in place?

From loading/unloading pallets to packing orders and despatching goods, each workplace has a different way of doing things. But, what’s most important is that the process for each of these tasks is safe and efficient, and most of all consistent.

3.      Do you conduct regular staff training?

Training ensures all staff are up-to-date with the safest and most efficient way of completing tasks within the warehouse environment. All processes and safety procedures should be regularly communicated to staff.

4.      Are staff wearing the right gear?

Protective and high-visibility workwear should be worn by staff when working in any warehouse storage facility. For specific tasks, additional safety accessories may be required, such as protective eyewear, gloves, ear plugs and hard hats.

5.      Does your warehouse have adequate safety signage?

Signage acts as a constant reminder for staff to wear the appropriate safety gear or to adhere to particular safety procedures. Signage can also highlight any potential dangers throughout your facility, which can help avoid serious injuries or incidences in your warehouse.

Additionally, for each bay of pallet racking, safe working load signs are required to ensure staff do not overload the storage system.

6.      Is your materials handling equipment adequately maintained?

Materials handling equipment should be checked prior to each shift and regularly serviced to ensure each vehicle is safe to operate.

7.      Have you scheduled an annual rack inspection?

An annual rack inspection is essential to ensure your pallet racking continues to meet Australian safety standards. It is recommended that a qualified rack inspector conducts a full review of your racking, detailing any damages and include recommendations for repairs and maintenance at least every 12 months.
