Unum Builds on a Strong Inclusive Culture

Unum Builds on a Strong Inclusive Culture

Earlier in 2020 – for the third year in a row – Unum earned a perfect score on the Human Rights Campaign’s Corporate Equality Index. This benchmarking tool measures corporate policies and practices for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer employees. We take this Best Places to Work for LGBTQ Equality honor seriously, invest significant resources to ensure a strong, inclusive culture, and encourage other leading organizations and community partners to do the same.

Unum is constantly investing in resources to foster a workplace that welcomes diverse backgrounds and perspectives and where every employee feels valued and respected. That begins with providing progressive benefits for same-sex couples and transgender employees, including parity for different- and same-sex spouses, domestic partner benefits for same sex couples, and health care coverage for procedures related to gender transition. Additionally, our equal opportunity employment, non-discrimination and anti-harassment policies specifically protect LGBTQ employees.

Here at Unum, we also offer a variety of programming and training opportunities for all employees to learn about issues such as unconscious bias and inclusion in the workplace. These efforts are led by Unum’s Office of Inclusion & Diversity in partnership with our LGBTQ Employee Resource Group (ERG) – a community of nearly 300 employees who develop and support education and advocacy efforts, offer guidance for LGBTQ employees in their growth, development and wellbeing, and provide best practices to all employees on how to be allies for their coworkers.

While the coronavirus pandemic has shifted some of our in-person plans for Pride 2020, we’re still finding ways to engage with our more than 10,000 employees. We’re encouraging team members from across the globe to share their stories on our internal social channels, spotlighting important films and documentaries about the LGBTQ experience, and hosting a virtual Pride panel event with employees highlighting the intersectional experiences of Black employees who are part of the LGBTQ community.

As we celebrate this June, we’re committed to making Pride a year-round celebration to help Unum become one of the most inclusive, diverse and welcoming companies within our communities and worldwide in the employee benefits market.
