Unleashing Creative Leadership: Transformative Strategies for Innovation and Collaboration

It’s something so important that I put myself inside a robot in order to experience it.

That’s me, the skinny one in the middle, posing for my Appreciative Inquiry class photo and receiving my course certificate at Case Western Reserve University in Ohio.

I was thrilled to complete this year-long course in a unique fashion - logging in from my computer here in California but being “in” the classroom in Cleveland, Ohio via a robot that roved around the classroom with my video feed attached.

Taking this step confirmed my decision to become certified in one of the most innovative yet untapped methods for creative leadership and organizational transformation: Appreciative Inquiry.

What Exactly is Appreciative Inquiry?

At its core, Appreciative Inquiry is about shifting the paradigm from problem-centric to possibility-focused.

It’s a collaborative approach that leverages the existing strengths within an organization to foster innovation and creative problem-solving.

Here’s how it turns traditional strategy on its head:

  • Instead of fixating on faults, we ask, "What's working, and why?"

  • Rather than dissecting failures, we explore peak moments of excellence.

  • We build on what's right to design our future—not just repair the past.

During my decades in the professional trenches, I've witnessed Appreciative Inquiry catalyze profound change, especially when leaders are in pursuit of innovative solutions for pivotal organizational challenges or initiatives.

This approach is particularly impactful in situations such as:

  • Reimagining your strategic planning to not only meet but exceed your goals, by scrutinizing and enhancing your existing strategies.

  • Navigating the complexities of organizational transformation, especially when it involves melding diverse teams that may have different values, cultural backgrounds, and work methodologies.

  • Crafting bold, fresh creative campaigns or pioneering new processes, products, and methods that push the boundaries of the conventional.

  • Leveraging the full potential of your ecosystem partnerships and in-house capabilities, moving beyond mere cost efficiency to strategic excellence.

  • Addressing the intricate puzzle of data-centric decision-making by evolving your technological infrastructure and organizational framework to stay ahead in a data-driven landscape.

Why Appreciative Inquiry? Why Now?

In addition to starting and scaling my own large creative agency of 400 employees (Kern) and  selling it to Omnicom, I’ve spent 35 years working with the best marketing and creative leaders for many of the biggest brands on the planet.

Those experiences revealed to me the unique leadership & team dynamics both Fortune 500 marketing departments and creative agencies face on a daily basis.

In the wake of COVID-19, the complexity of leadership challenges has escalated, catalyzing the inception of Kern and Partners.

Our vision is to empower leaders to kindle the spark of brilliance and nurture the inherent creativity within every team member. At Kern and Partners, we specialize in leadership and team development training tailored to the unique demands of creative industries.

Our commitment is not just to promise, but to guarantee a marked elevation in team creativity and performance, underpinned by enriching the competencies of managers, creative directors, and senior leadership.

The beauty of Appreciative Inquiry lies in its unconventional approach: it capitalizes on collective strengths to forge trust and open new channels of communication, sparking collaborations that lead to groundbreaking, innovative solutions for substantial organizational hurdles - ideas that may have previously been inconceivable.

Initiating the Appreciative Inquiry process can set in motion a positive transformation in both culture and team dynamics. The methodology operates on the principle of the 'appreciative eye,' a perspective that honors the vast wellspring of creative potential residing in every individual within any collective - be it an organization, a business network, or a group.

A Unique Approach to Creative Leadership

Appreciative Inquiry stands in stark contrast to conventional problem-solving strategies that tend to spotlight weaknesses and work towards their resolution. This innovative approach to leadership and organizational change emphasizes the discovery and magnification of what's already working well.

This method is not about dissecting issues or dwelling on deficits. It's a forward-thinking, strength-based strategy that celebrates and builds upon the existing virtues and capabilities within an organization.

Leaders are prompted to pivot their focus and ask introspective, uplifting questions:

  • What aspects of our organization are performing exceptionally?

  • When do our teams truly excel, and what sparks that brilliance?

  • At what moments is our collective performance at its zenith?

  • Which factors contribute to our peak performance?

  • What foundational values and strengths are at the heart of our organizational identity?

By answering these questions, Appreciative Inquiry cultivates a leadership style that not only recognizes but also fosters the best in every team and individual, propelling the entire organization towards a flourishing future.

The Imperative of Appreciative Inquiry for Modern Marketing Leaders

Today's marketing and agency leaders navigate an unprecedented sea of change, where the speed and scope of evolution are unlike anything seen before in the industry.

Consider these critical shifts:

  • In-House Agency Proliferation: With 80% of brands now fostering in-house agencies, the dynamics within and between internal and external teams are being redefined, affecting collaboration, work type, and pricing structures.

  • Data Privacy and Utilization: The demand for robust data protection and the savvy use of insights calls for continuous investment in both technology and expertise. To extract maximum value from data, marketing teams must constantly evolve their skills and evaluate the returns on their tech investments.

  • AI and Machine Learning Evolution: Cutting-edge AI is reshaping notions of creativity, authorship, and skill requirements, presenting both challenges and opportunities for creative processes.

  • CMO Accountability: The pressure is on for Chief Marketing Officers to demonstrate the measurable impact of marketing investments, a task complicated by the intricacies of omnichannel marketing.

  • Diversity and Inclusion: Appreciative Inquiry empowers leaders to overhaul traditional structures and foster inclusive cultures, improving recruitment, training, and strategy execution to better align with today’s diverse workforce.
