On September the 21th, within the OPCW workshop “General Aspects on Chemical Safety and Security in Laboratories” held in Milan last 20-22 September,  a group of 17 trainees, from all over the world, and several experts from Industry, Universities  and Istitutions, visited our Albizzate plant.

The Chemical Safety and Security Management Programme

This is an activity coordinated by Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW)  to promote and disseminate chemical safety and security management culture through the sharing of policies and best practices with chemistry practitioners, policy makers, national authorities, and chemical industry associations.

The project aims as well to enhance capacities and improve cooperation, offering tools and knowledge to mitigate the risks arising from chemical accidents and potential misuse of toxic chemicals.

The programme offers training to specialists on practical aspects of chemical safety and security, and forums to discuss best practices, sharing information and exchange experiences, policies,  in chemical safety and security management, and generate recommendations for the review of the existing policies and practices, and fostering wider regional and international cooperation in the field of chemical safety and security management.

The Chemical Safety and Security Management Programme is coordinated by OPCW with the collaboration of CNR-SCITEC of Milan and Federchimica, and the support of the “Autorità Nazionale per la Proibizione delle Armi Chimiche” of “Ministero degli Affari Esteri e della Cooperazione Internazionale” and Rome University – Tor Vergata.

Tabletop exercise: Leakage of ethanol during the truck discharge and pool fire

On discovering the fire, the truck discharge operator evacuates, along the escape route he pushes the Emergency Stop Button for switching off the electricity and triggering the water deluge on truck, then he raises the alarm by calling the 2222 (emergency number).

The 2222 call activates the Emergency Coordinator.

Reached the fire site, he raises the emergency alarm by operating the warning sirens. The emergency warning system is capable of giving two distinctly different signals: warning (discontinuous sound) and evacuation (continuous sound). On hearing the discontinuous alarm, Fire Wardens proceed to fire fighting positions while the rest of people remain in stand by.

The Emergency Coordinator leads Fire Wardens in closing a no-go zone and operating water hydrants for fire extinguishing.

We thanks all the partecipants and our internal team composed by:

  • Truck discharge operator: Ziviani Stefano
  • Emergency Coordinator: Zanardo Maurizio
  • Fire Wardens: Adesini Giorgio, Colombo Alessandro, Fontana Massimo, Iannello Antonio, Tagini Alessandro and Tamborini Roberto
