Summertime And, You’ve Got Work To Do
If you have another year of high school left, you are probably thinking; those lucky seniors, they get to go off to college instead of coming back to high school… Well, they will probably have a more exciting fall than their high school counterparts, but it will also be more demanding. If they don’t live up to expectations, their time away from home may last less than a year.
Believe me, the graduating seniors have their work cut out for them as you sophomores and juniors will soon find out. In the meantime, you underclassmen need to be ready for a productive summer.
In case you have been too busy to have heard, the ApplyTexas application will launch a month early this year. On July 1st, rising seniors will be able to establish a profile and begin completing the application. Not all colleges will begin accepting the application in July but having it complete will save you from dealing with it during the fall semester. If not already completed, the essays should be a priority along with requesting letters of recommendation and an up-to-date resume.
There are also other things that high school students who want to attend college should be thinking about. A few of them sould be part-time jobs, academic and/or athletic camps, studying for college entrance exams and getting credit for a class that doesn’t quite fit into your schedule next year. No matter which of the prior suggestions are on your list, volunteering/community service should also be there.
Anyone who has worked with me for more than a few weeks will know that all the things previously mentioned have a prominent place on college applications. Making the student aware of this and encouraging the student to find things in each area that they enjoy will help build a strong application without too much effort.
