Stay Clear. Stay Safe On The Job

CAUGHT IN BETWEEN OBJECTS

Very similar to being struck by an object, another major cause of work deaths is getting caught in between objects. Examples:

  • Caught in an object or equipment
  • Caught in material that is collapsing

Rolling and rotating machinery, swinging, flying, sliding, or slipping objects are all dangerous. Last year, 72 workers lost their lives last year after being caught in between objects. But, as we know, being caught between objects is highly preventable.

Paying close attention and staying clear of moving objects and machinery are you first steps to safety.

Employers should make special efforts to educate employees about scenarios and areas to avoid. As always, personnel should conduct job safety analysis meetings and make sure everyone is aware of hazardous, moving objects. Spotters who help big machinery maneuver onsite, should always keep a clear path to safety.

Here are some extra tips to use when working to create a safe work environment.

  • Walk around vehicles to ensure they are in safe operating condition
  • Store loose materials in a secure location
  • Secure any items at a height
  • Place your heavy objects on/or close to the floor
  • One drawer open at a time with filing cabinets
  • Wear the right PPE for the job
  • Walk behind or stay clear of moving equipment if possible
  • Don’t block your vision by overloading moving equipment like forklifts
  • Use only the equipment you have been trained to use
  • Keep safety devices like pulleys and lift lines in good, working condition
  • Approach doors and corners slowly
  • Make sure personnel operating heavy equipment can see you
  • When loading material, make sure the load is evenly dispersed to stop tipping

Be safe out there!
