Our People - International Stories: Joash Singh (Enterprise Risk Assurance)

Q1. What was the motivating factor that made you move over to Australia and what made you choose to move with KPMG originally?

Joash: Having visited Australia several times before, I was aware of the great quality of life, and the diverse range of opportunities. Australia is also closer to home. Being in the Fiji office for almost 3 years, I chose to continue working at KPMG because of its collaborative culture and supportive staff.

Q2. From a lifestyle perspective how has the change been? What are 2 things that you expected and 2 things that you didn’t expect?

Joash: It’s definitely been a positive lifestyle change for me since moving to Brisbane. The flexible working arrangements have allowed me to improve on, and better manage my physical and mental health. I’ve also been exploring a lot more and that has really helped me settle into life in Australia.

2 things I expected were a great quality of life and extremely good weather.

2 things I didn’t expect: How welcoming and friendly everyone was in the office. Coming from a much smaller office where everyone knew each other, I expected to have some difficulty in making new friends in the office because of the number of staff, however once the office reopened, everyone was really welcoming and friendly, from the graduates all the way through to the Partners. Secondly, e-scooters! You can find them in almost every corner and they’re so convenient.

Q3. How do you feel your time at KPMG Australia has influenced your career direction?

My time at KPMG Australia has allowed me to better understand my areas of interest as a professional, and the opportunities provided to me have significantly contributed to my development.

Q4. What has been your most rewarding experience with KPMG and on that note the most challenging experience?

My most rewarding experience overall is seeing the positive impact we have on our clients. The ability to collaborate with some of the brightest minds is also extremely rewarding. The most challenging experience was right at the beginning of my role here in Australia. With everyone working from home due to COVID, it was challenging to meet new people and make new friends in the office, however that changed for the better when the office reopened.

Q5. What would your general advice be for anyone abroad that is on the fence or looking to relocate to Australia?

Take the plunge! There’s something for everyone, and you’re definitely going to meet people who share the same interests as you. Everyone at KPMG is also very supportive, and that’s really important as you settle into life in Australia.
