Making a Difference Through Excellence and Passion

Nikki Jones works as an administrative specialist for the Atlanta District Office of the Wage and Hour Division. This Administrative Professionals Day, we chatted with her to learn about her career.

Q: Can you tell us about your role and how long you’ve been with the Wage and Hour Division?

I’ve been an administrative specialist here since November 2022.

Q: What are some of the most challenging and rewarding aspects of your job?

As a newer administrative specialist, it can be challenging to implement new processes within the agency since many employees are not accustomed to change. I bring a wealth of knowledge, experience, passion, new ideas and consistency to the administrative processes in the Atlanta office. It has been rewarding working in this particular capacity.

Q: Why did you want to work for this agency?

During my interview with the management team, I felt an immediate sense of comfort. The management team stressed the need for a strong administrative support person for the Atlanta office, and my skillset/vision is in direct alignment with the next phase of my career. The Wage and Hour Division was the right fit for me based on my experience, and I was confident in my talents. There are also several opportunities for growth within this agency.

Q: What are your professional goals for the future?

My goals are to have continuous growth as an administrative professional and to gain more administrative program management and analyst experience. I would like to be promoted to an administrative lead, supervisor or management position. I also plan to pursue opportunities to train, volunteer or even detail to other positions.

Q: What are you most proud of in your career so far?

I am proud I make a difference, I am proud of the passion exuded through my work ethic, and I am proud of my admirable tenacity to propel forward – no matter the circumstances.

Q: Can you share a particularly memorable experience or project in which you’ve participated?

Attending an outreach event in 2023 that involved grade school students with my colleagues from the Atlanta office was memorable. I had never heard of this event, and was thrilled to see so many students performing positive activities, using their talents and showcasing to the world. The interaction with the students allowed me to learn more about the event, and to also share information about the Wage and Hour Division, as well as the services we offer to the community.

Q: What advice would you give to someone who is interested in pursuing a career in administrative support?

They should learn all they can with an open mind, pursue opportunities to do more and always be supportive. Professionalism, compassion and empathy are important.

Q: What are some of your hobbies or interests outside of work?

I enjoy exercising, dancing, riding my motorcycle and traveling.

Q: When work gets overwhelming, what’s your go-to method for destressing?

Coloring, spa visits and cardio are great stress relievers! I also love long walks in the park.

Q: Is there anything else you’d like to share?

I am an avid Georgia Bulldogs football fan. I am a mother of two beautiful daughters and grandmother of three. I love volunteering in the community and I am a certified notary. I also love planning parties and events.
