Tell us your real names, country of birth and childhood experience.

My real name is David Leo Blasband, I was born in Kuala Lumpur where my dad was a sound engineer but moved to Brussels around 2004 and after a tumultuous pro ice hockey career, and I now live in Paris.

Tell us your academic qualification.

I graduated high school in Strasbourg and I’m currently on my final year at the Abbey Road Institute for sound engineering.

Tell us about your music career, band name, musical background, experience and skills.

My mom sings and my dad was a prominent sound engineer in the Malaysian music scene so I’ve always been surrounded by music. I learned guitar and got pretty decent but my musical journey truly starts about 3 years ago.

I actually started out as a producer, just making instrumentals for friends. But there came a time when I had more beats than friends haha. That’s when I started singing myself.

Now I produce for artists (from France, Belgium and Los Angeles), TV shows and myself.

Tell us about your genre, concept and idea behind your music video and the song.

My genre is quite mixed. I dip into Funk, Disco, R&B, Rock and even Gospel Music.

I love mismatching elements from different genres. However, everything I do has a soulful flavor to it with modern sounds.

“January” started out as an 80’s track, but after adding more modern elements to the soundscape, it felt like it was good meeting between two eras. With that in mind, we kept the video fairy simple but a lot of fun!

Tell us how to run a record label independently and successfully based on your experience as an artist.

Well it’s pretty widely known that networking is fundamental to success in today’s music business.

I think I would establish a common audience so that the fan bases of the artists in the label would blend together and the connections of each artist would be beneficial to the others.

As much of a music nerd as I am, I must admit that the product is no longer the music but the artists’ brands. So I would make sure that all these artists’ brands don’t match.

I would rather let them be complementary as to touch wider (soon to be common) audience.

Tell us how you are promoting your music.

Currently, I have a lot of friends, fellow artists and my promotion agency is helping me out in sharing the video on social media.

Tell us what makes you happy and what makes you sad.

Malaysian food makes me happy. Parisian weather makes me sad.

Explain clearly the story or concept behind the song.

As I said, it started out as a bit of a throwback. As the production process went on, I really made it a point to make it current yet original in today’s context.

I wrote most of it at a concert while waiting for the show to start and it really is about a girl who clearly is acting a certain way around me. We all know one of those haha.

Tell us about other members of your band, music producer, crew or music video director, how the song was recorded and how the music video was shot.

As far as the sound goes. I produce everything and I sing everything. It was recorded in Brussels in FLYFLYFLY studios and I punched the details in my home studio here in Paris. I’m very fortunate to have a sound engineering dad, so he does all of my mixes and the mastering is done by the great Jerboa.

For the video we had a lot of discussions with a few directors, but ended doing it all in house with FLYFLYFLY and RCM solutions.

Tell us how long you have been in the music industry, your experience and your future goal.

I’ve always been around it in some way; Jason Lo was basically my uncle haha.

However I’m very much a rookie in my own journey. My goal is definitely to be a prominent artist and put Southeast Asia on the map.

Tell us what makes you unique from others.

I would say my background helps a lot and also my mixing of genres.

Tell us your weakness and strength pertaining music.

My weakness is my singing ability and I’m working hard at getting better at.

My strength would be my production.

Tell us your position on “DIY” Do It Yourself” and signing to a major label.

I’m a big believer in playing to your strength. If you’re a good networker, don’t waste your time and outsource your weakness and focus on what you do.

And if you’re musically gifted. Definitely try to get signed and try to save as much time as possible so you can focus on your sound and leave promo to the big boys.

A lot of modern and old drum samples, vintage synths, 808’s and my trusty electric guitars.

Tell us other activities you will like to pursue apart from music.

As said, I was a pro athlete so that will always be lurking in the back of my mind.

Tell us about gaining the confidence to sing in front of a large crowd for the first time.

PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE. You’ve got to earn your confidence from yourself.

Tell us the best way to make money in the music business.

Firstly, doing it for money will not get you very far. However if that is your only goal, I would work in the event side of things (shows, festivals, etc.…).
