Key Takeaways from the 2023 Plunet Summit

Key Takeaways from the 2023 Plunet Summit

Last week Josh Branton our Global Process and Technology Director and Mara Butuza our Regional Operations Manager for EMEA & the Americas attended the 2023 Plunet Summit.

During the event, many subject matter experts from within Plunet and others in the industry spoke on a variety of topics.

“This event reminded me why in-person learning and collaboration remain so important in a digital age. Although there is a lot of value to be found in the presentations, most of my key takeaways were around the conversations before and after the events. Conversations with other Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) from within the industry demonstrated how despite such similar roles, everyone in this industry can have very different trajectories. And only by discussing specific ideas can we all appreciate and understand ‘standard practice’. If such a thing exists!”

APIs

It's wonderful to learn about the diverse ways people employ various APIs, including the Plunet API, to develop distinct integrations and automations. At Global Lingo, we are proud to boast both our Customer Relationship Management (CRM); and Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) integration, which improve our internal efficiency; data integrity; and service offering. We are thrilled to begin implementing these improvements and are eagerly looking forward to the work ahead.

Plunet Customisation

Plunet provides a fascinating option for customisation through JavaScript header injections, allowing users to tailor their Plunet instance. We are excited to explore and leverage this feature to enhance our utilisation of the platform even further.

Upgrading systems

When it comes to system updates at Global Lingo, we adopt a cautious yet optimistic approach. While alpha and beta testing provide insights into usability, security, and functionality, the true test lies with our first customers who implement updates in their production environments. We have been utilising Plunet 8 for a significant period now. Following discussions with the exceptional team at Plunet, it appears that there are still some lingering concerns regarding the transition to version 9 for our specific needs. Consequently, we will take necessary measures to ensure the compatibility and suitability of version 9 before deploying it in our systems.

Artificial Intelligence

What would a language industry event be in 2023 if not for a lengthy discussion on the impact of AI? It’s funny. AI has been used in language workflows for years now, but the term ‘AI’ has since become almost synonymous with ‘ChatGPT’. Much like ‘Banksy’ and ‘graffiti’ it’s clear to many of us that the concept existed long before its ‘creator’. Nevertheless, conversations surrounding AI, concerns about uncertainty, and the transition from a goal of "project management by exception" to "translator by exception" persist within the industry. It's fascinating to learn how various companies, including language service providers (LSPs) and non-language companies with internal localisation/globalisation teams, are adapting to and benefiting from AI. The potential impact of AI on our industry is significant and multifaceted, capable of both saving and potentially crippling various aspects. We may already be experiencing its effects without even fully realising it.

Summary

The 2023 Plunet Summit left a lasting impression, featuring renowned industry figures who generously shared their knowledge, experiences, and lessons learned. This event served as a reminder of why it's attendees are passionate about this industry—its collaborative nature. It's remarkable how no two Language Service Providers (LSPs) are identical, fostering an environment where everyone is eager to assist each other in achieving optimal processes, leveraging the best technology, and adopting effective leadership approaches. Looking ahead, we hope for the return of this event in 2024, allowing Global Lingo to continue attending and fostering a fruitful partnership with Plunet for many years to come.
