June is National Safety Month... Make It Safe With Communication.

The month of June is National Safety Month!

What are you doing to stay safe on the job this month? First, safety is part of every job every day.

Communication is the key to safety. More so, understanding is the part of communication that is lacking most of the time. It may be misunderstanding the job task, hazards of the job, the instructions given, or the "perceived" expectations of getting the job done (leading to hurrying and skipping safety steps).

Communication is tricky. Here are some tips on making sure understanding is taking place when you are communicating, whether on a job site or in a relationship (I get in trouble with this one all the time).

1) The person giving communication should ask the person receiving it if they understand and demonstrate by conveying their understanding of the communication. This will make sure you are both on the same page. Or...

2) The person receiving communication should convey what they understand the communication to mean (their interpretation) to the person giving it. Most importantly, if the receiver does not understand any part of the communication they should ask the giver to explain.

There, two simple steps to clear up all of your communication misunderstandings. Clear understanding is the responsibility of both parties.
