Interview Etiquette

Interview Etiquette

Some of the stories I hear as a recruiter will surprise you. Other will make you laugh. Some of the stories I’ve heard from my clients about candidate behavior during interviews include:

• Showing up drunk for an interview

• Bringing a pet to the interview

• Wearing the shirt and tie, but not pants for a video conference

Now, I’m not saying you’ve done something as outrageous as showing up to your interview with your pet llama. What I am saying is there's a chance you may have been rude in your interview and didn't even realize it.

  • Running late to an interview? Make a call to let them know!
  • Be polite when greeted by a receptionist. Say please and thank you.
  • You may not think anyone's watching you in the parking lot, but sometimes they are. Consider this before and after your interview.
  • Waiting in the reception area with another candidate? Don’t speak poorly of this person in your interview, even if they were there with their pet llama.

A little consideration goes a long way. Remember your manners. Remain poised and professional to ace your interview. And it never hurts to send a thank you!
