Improv class, growth mindset & Your Wardrobe

Improv class, growth mindset & Your Wardrobe

-Lessons from Improv classes and how they apply to your wardrobe -

Improv is “growth mindset”. The exercises help you see where you have a fixed mindset versus a growth one.

The growth mindset creates a passion for knowledge, knowledge of the self. While the fixed mindset needs to be accepted at any cost.

Below I share some of my lessons from Improv:

Lesson 1 = to flow and not control

Improv phrase “Yes and…” is about having an open mind, being present, listening to then add something to the discussion. To start with a “no” is a form of control that keeps you safe in your fixed mindset.

Flowing in your wardrobe = to use the “Yes, and.. let me explore this other style” or “Yes, and let me experiment with these other colors”. On the other hand, a fixed mindset sounds like “I can only wear this type of jeans” or “I only wear black” or “Those clothes are for work only”.

Are you a: “Yes, and” person or “land of no” person?

Lesson 2 = to receive

Improv is about receiving from someone else and adding something of your own. However, fear of the unknown, stops you from receiving, learning and also keeps you stuck. For example, I added: “No, I don’t have a daughter”. “No, I don’t own tools”. Afterwards I realized how those statements ended the conversation. Yes, I felt safe but I was not receiving and I was controlling.

Receiving in your wardrobe = You receive information, a loooot of information from society, family, social media, etc and instead of adding your own flare, your own personality you follow other people’s rules because the fear of not belonging is too big.

Lesson 3 = about Freedom

In improv there are no boundaries, no structure it is whatever happens and how you react. Freedom with no boundaries to do whatever you want. If you are used to the structure of the corporate world, college, family life or anything that you have done for many years, and all of a sudden you have freedom, what do you do with it? Last year gave us a glimpse of how to live with a different structure WFH. How was it for you?

Freedom in your wardrobe = nowadays, there are so many choices of clothing available to you, while it can be overwhelming it also gives you the freedom to explore and create your own rules. Or, follow what society, family, fashion imposes. You decide.

“An unexamined life is not worth living”. Socrates

For a reason it says Life, because it is a 24/7 life examination.

What fixed mindset in your wardrobe or in your life is holding you back, causing frustration and maybe even depression?
