HPE Updates DL20 & ML30 Gen10 Entry ProLiant Platforms

One of the best qualities of HPE servers is tight integration with partners like Intel, so it's no surprise that just one day after Intel announced that all-new Xeon Entry CPUs are shipping, HPE has two new servers with said CPUs ready to put into the hands of SMB customers across the world.

Commonalities

Both the DL20 and ML30 Gen10 receive the following upgrades over Gen9:

  • Intel Xeon-E CPUs based on the new Coffee Lake Architecture (up to 6 cores, 12 threads @ 3.8 GHz base, 4.7GHz boost).
  • DDR4 2666 MHz memory (up to 64GB today or 128GB possible with 2019 BIOS update).
  • NVMe M.2 SSDs for boot
  • Serial port option.

Dedicated iLO port option with iLO5, previously reserved for the ML110 or DL360 and up.

DL20 Gen10 Specific Upgrades:

  • Supports HPE AROC controller (ie P408i-a) so your RAID card/SAS HBA no longer has to consume a PCIe slot. This was previously reserved for the DL360 and up.
  • Up to 6 SFF hard drives 2 NVMe M.2 SSDs vs 4 SFF on Gen9.

  • LFF servers can now be configured with redundant power supplies, which was not possible on the DL20 Gen9.
  • 3-Year Parts, 3-Year Labor, 3-Year Onsite standard warranty, up from 1/1/1.
  • ASHRAE A3 and A4 support, up from A3 only.

ML30 Gen10 Specific Upgrades:

  • Two x16 and two x8 PCIe slots, vs 16/4/1/1 on Gen9.
  • ASHRAE A3 & A4 support for higher operating temperatures in rough environments.

Why should I care, Kevin?

Overall, there are substantial upgrades gained here for SMB customers who need to get the absolute most out of their IT budget. These customers should have the option for the fastest processors in the segment, secure out of band management, and expanded storage options including NVMe drives. Today with HPE, they do. Supported on Windows 2016, VMware 6.7/6.5 U2, Red Hat, SUSE, and ClearOS, customers also have the full range of OS choices on day one, thanks to that same HPE partner integration. If you or your customers are wondering when the right time is to evaluate your SMB or remote office servers, now is looking like a good time to check out both of these options from HPE.
