How To Pay for In-Home Care

An in-home caregiver can provide essential daily services such as help with cooking, cleaning, bathing, and toileting so that seniors can continue to be comfortable in their homes and make the best of their silver years. But one of the main concerns people have when pursuing in-home care is the cost.

How Much Does In-Home Care Cost?

For many people, getting in-home care might seem challenging. It is not always covered by insurance, and depending on the frequency of care required, the costs can add up. Genworth Financial’s Cost of Care Survey identified the average cost of in-home care in America as $4,957 a month. However, in the long run in-home nursing can actually help you save money compared to the costs of other services. The cost of a nursing home room is much higher, with a shared room at $7,908 per month and a private room at $9,034. For this reason, in-home care can often be more economical for seniors who do not require intensive in-home nursing care, in addition to the benefits of aging in place. 

Does Medicare or Medicaid Cover In-Home Care?

One thing which many people interested in in-home care want to know is whether their insurance covers caregiving. Some private insurance will help cover the costs of in-home care. The amount covered by your benefits will vary from plan to plan. It may also be impacted by the length of time you need care. 

Medicare does cover non-medical home care, but only in certain circumstances: the patient must be eligible for Home Health Care with a skilled nurse, and be certified as home-bound by a doctor. The non-medical home care must also be provided by a home health agency. Medicare will not help pay for in-home care if you require more than part-time or “intermittent” skilled nursing care, defined as less than eight hours a day and less than seven days a week. 

If you or your loved one meet these requirements, there is still a limit on how much Medicare will cover. Medicare will not cover meals delivered to your home, homemaker services such as shopping, cleaning, or laundry, and help with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, or toileting when no other care is needed. Medicaid can also help you with the cost of in-home care. The Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System (AHCCCS) is Arizona’s Medicaid agency and can offer some services for patients requiring in-home nursing or care. People who are over the age of 65, blind, or have a disability may be eligible for aid through this program.
