How Do I Resign on a Short Notice Using Resignation Letter Template?

Sometimes there comes a moment when you need to resign on short notice. With the industry standard being two weeks, you may be wondering how to resign if you need to leave in some time less than that. 


This article will cover how to write a short notice resignation letter, including some resignation letter examples. 

What a Resignation Letter Should Look Like 

When you write your resignation letter, no matter if it's for two weeks' notice or shorter, it should always be typed in a business letter format. The business letter format remains to be the standard for such letters. 


Your letter should include the name of the position you are leaving from along with the effective date, the reason you are resigning, and remember to thank your employer for whatever skills or experience you gained while working for them. Lastly, you'll close with your signature.

Can Resignation Letter Be Sent by Email

The short answer is no. When possible, you always want to deliver your resignation letter in person. It is considered the more polite thing to do when handing in your resignation. You will preferably want the letter to be typed, not handwritten. 


If you're not in a position to hand-deliver your resignation, then an email is fine. This would be the case if you work remotely or are simply unable to access your employee in person for whatever reason. When sending your resignation as an email, be sure to make the title line clear. An example would be "Resignation - John Smith." 


Additionally, even when you hand-deliver a physical copy of your resignation, you can follow up with an email. 


 

Reasons For A Short Term Resignation

If you need to resign on short notice, it means your resignation is effective anytime before two weeks. Two weeks' notice is usually standard, and many companies require two weeks' notice so that they have time to find your replacement. However, there are cases where a full two weeks notice is not possible. 


When writing your resignation, it is a good practice to give a brief reason why you are not giving a full two weeks notice. Some reasons for this may include:

⦁ You are starting a new job immediately

⦁ You are moving
