Five Reasons to Join Magento's Team in 2018

I joined Magento's marketing team in May of 2017. As we start the new year, I thought I'd share some of the top reasons to consider Magento for your next career move. If you like what you read, check out our Careers page.

1. You get to Be An Owner.

One of Magento's cornerstones -- "Be An Owner" -- celebrates the entrepreneurial spirit that runs throughout the company's history. I tell interested candidates who ask about life at Magento, "You can do almost anything here -- you just have to be willing to own it." Whether it's implementing a process, championing an investment in a key resource, or getting a new program off the ground, ownership is not only celebrated, it's attainable by every single employee. No matter where you are in the org chart, you'll have tangible, valuable projects to pursue every day, which will bring meaning and purpose to your work.

2. Our community will blow you away.

The open source roots of Magento mean we have a strong group of dedicated community contributors who help nurture and grow the Magento brand globally. But for those not closely familiar with the space, you may not know just how much our community does. In addition to hosting Magento events around the world, generating valuable content, and building an incredible marketplace of seriously cool extensions, our community inspires and contributes to continuous product innovations. This constant buzz gives the company culture a spirit and energy that is uniquely Magento.

3. We have an impressive, accessible leadership team.

A few years ago, while pursuing my MBA, I decided to make a transition from being employee #2 at a 40 person startup to employee #???,??? at a 138,000 person multinational company. There's a lot I could say about this shift (another day!) but there was one thing I really missed about being in a smaller company: access to leadership. The information you gather when you get access to senior leadership is like stargazing from an observatory instead of your backyard: the view is different up there. You can see further and more clearly. You get a renewed sense of perspective and scale. Magento is by no means small -- Glassdoor puts us in the 501-1000 employee range -- but in my time here, I've been impressed to see how accessible Magento's leadership team makes an effort to be. Make no mistake -- it is an effort, because these folks are busy! But in my first six months on the job, I've had more than one conversation with our CEO, Mark Lavelle, and even got a phone call welcoming me to the team on my first day from our SVP of Global Sales & Customer Success, Gary Specter. And I may have a bit of a bias, but I'm thrilled to be working under the leadership of Andrea Ward, Magento's CMO, who combines years of best practices from Oracle with an influential and inspiring management style.

4. The future of commerce is pretty cool -- and Magento gets to be a part of it.

I had the chance to hear our VP of Strategy, Peter Sheldon, speak last week at "Retail's Big Show" aka NRF in NYC and there's a LOT happening behind the scenes of your local brick & mortar. Whether it's the emergence of direct to consumer (D2C) brands rethinking how we shop or progressive web apps (PWAs) enabling consumers to have more seamless mobile experiences, there's no shortage of innovation in the commerce space. I'm probably most excited about the industry's "big dog" -- B2B commerce, which is growing at an estimated CAGR of 7.4% and expected to have a value of $1.2T by 2021.

5. We're hiring!

We are hiring across nearly all functions in great cities around the country (LA, SF, Austin & Philly) as well as in a few international locations. There's a good chance we have a job that would be interesting to you if you head over to Magento's Careers page. If you see something that might be a fit (I've called out a couple below), shoot me a message. I can't promise you'll get the job but I promise I'll do my best to get you connected with the right people. And maybe I'll see you around our Austin break room sometime!

Marketers: I'm hiring for a LA or SF based field marketing manager. Know someone amazing? Send them my way! Here's the job description.

Sales: We are looking for an inspiring sales leader to manage our SMB sales team. Here's the job description.
