Featured Lab Fridays: Denver

The Transcat Denver Calibration Lab is located in Aurora, CO, just 30 minutes outside of the Denver International Airport. With ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation, it serves as a general purpose calibration lab offering a variety of services and capabilities. In addition to standard in-lab services and local pickup and delivery, the Denver lab uses the unique location to its advantage and maintains a consistent on-site calibration presence throughout the Denver area and beyond, reaching as far as Oklahoma, New Mexico, Montana, Wyoming, Nebraska, and Kansas.

“With us being one of the only Transcat labs located so close to the center of the country, we get to cover a wide breadth of area here,” says Ryan Gohl, Regional Service Manager. “We’re perfectly situated to have a lot of unique opportunities come our way. So if a job comes up and the customer needs us there, we’re going to get the job done for them.”

Along with disciplines like electrical, pressure, temperature, and dimensional, the Denver Calibration Lab serves as the primary torque lab for Transcat, with torque and hydraulic torque capabilities of up to 20,000 ft-lbs. using an AKO High Torque system. It was also the first Transcat lab to offer RF and microwave calibration work, with capabilities up to 26.5GHz, which spearheaded Transcat into offering these services at other locations.

The Denver lab also does work for various dimensional hand tools, single and triaxial accelerometers from 0.5 Hz-20 kHz, high-voltage measurements up to 85kVAC/100kVDC, and oscilloscopes up to 20GHz. CMM and Vision System work is also big for the lab, allowing the team to record extremely precise dimensional measurements. The CMM in particular can measure the X axis up to 39”, the Y axis up to 72”, and the Z axis up to 17”, while the Vision System can measure the X and Y axis up to 12” and 360 degrees.

The team in Denver works with many different industries in the area, including alternative energy, with wind energy playing a big role in the region. Other industries include pharmaceutical, medical device companies, life sciences, aerospace, food service, and various government contract work.

“One thing about Colorado and Denver specifically is that a lot of companies and industries have chosen to set up shop in this area due to its central location in the U.S..” says Dominic Holleman, Assistant Lab Manager for Denver. “There’s a lot of high-end, highly technical industries here that require calibration in one way or another, so we’ve had to figure out how to do a lot of things that other labs haven’t simply because those same industries aren’t located anywhere else.”

The Denver lab has also been a proving ground of sorts, where the team isn’t afraid to take on a challenge.

“We’re always willing to try something new for our customers,” Gohl explains. “They might throw something at us that we haven’t done before, and we’ll get the right technicians on the job to figure it out, develop a process around it, and work with the customer to get what they need and get their equipment calibrated and back in service.”

“Denver has always been able to figure out how to solve a challenge,” adds Holleman. “We have a good track record and reputation for it, and it’s a big part of our mindset here.”

A large part of the team in Denver also comes from the military, which contributes to the focused mindset.

“Coming from the military definitely translates into the work we do and how we approach things,” Holleman says. “We have a strong work ethic here and we value discipline and getting things done effectively and efficiently.”

These characteristics also lend themselves to the relationships the team has with their customers.

“We’re always going to treat our customers with respect and interact with them on both a professional and personal level,” says Holleman. “I think that’s why a lot of our customers trust us and the work we do. No matter what, we’re going to do everything in our power to get the job done and get it done right.”
