Everything Starts and Ends with the Heart
I started my entrepreneurship journey with a simple heartbeat - to make high quality, advanced and innovative medical technology accessible to more patients. This unifying purpose is the origin of Genesis MedTech. Since then, much has happened.
Entering September 2021, we continue to live in a world of VUCA marked most impressionably by an ever-evolving COVID-19 that continues to surprise governments worldwide at every turn, with sneaky new variants wreaking havoc whenever the coast seems clear. In response, businesses, education, technology have all been disrupted and are evolving to play catch up with the so-called new norm. Likewise, competition within the Medtech industry has intensified.
What remains constant for us is our heart; our adherence to fulfilling our mission of bringing advanced products to more patients, especially those in emerging markets. Amidst these constant changes and volatility, this steadfastness to our purpose has anchored our growth, uniting our growing team in finding meaning in what we are doing for the betterment of people’s lives and society at a larger scale.
As we continue to grow and add more partners and comrades into our ranks, we have taken intentional initiatives and put in place HR best practices to build a family-like culture of support and care. This is critical as we must first look after our own before we can help others through our work and products. After all, we remain in our infancy stages of growth and our people must go out into the business battlefields, knowing we have got their backs, their dreams and families covered.
Unfortunately, we recently lost one of our very own to COVID-19; Mike Van Zandt, our esteemed leader, friend and immense talent passed away from COVID-19 complications. He will always be fondly remembered as one of Genesis’ pioneers who truly lived out the title of my article, “Everything Starts and Ends with the Heart”.
Mike had heart; A heart that is aligned with the heartbeat and purpose of Genesis, that strived to bring healthcare closer to patients through his work despite challenging times and on a personal scale, a heart that looked after the people around him, ensuring people under his charge have fun and find enjoyment amid hard work.
It is fitting we respond in kind as we work closely with Mike’s family to help them overcome any difficulties caused by this unexpectedly sudden departure. Beyond simple condolences, we are taking concrete actions to support the family emotionally, financially and in any other way possible.
This is again heart - the heart of Genesis, in being responsible to our people first and foremost, sharing their pains/joys and taking care of each other as we strive to make healthcare accessible to more patients. While the world continues to change, we keep our hearts steady, unchanged, immutable, doing the right thing for people and patients, guided by the heart and staying the course from start to end.

It is just so heart-breaking to hear the demise of Mike, a character full of energy, kindness and fun. The scene of Mike chairing 2015 BSC charity auction like a pro is still vivid in my memory. Thanks, Warren, for the beatufitul tribute to Mike and to the vision you and Mike have been building together. The world is not only about growth and competition but also love, heart and much more.
