Welcome to the first article of our ‘Inside Wire’ series! This series is specifically tailored to benefit those of you who are exploring career options in the Design Engineering, Quality Engineering and Technical Sales markets.

Here at White Label, it is our priority not only to find the best talent for our clients and help candidates secure their dream jobs – but also to share the industry knowledge and insight that we pick up along the way.

Our specialist consultants have collated their knowledge to produce helpful pointers that will enable you to make a strong start in your career and land the best opportunities available to you!

This article focuses on the Design Engineering market, read on for more!

Our best practice tips:

  • Always design your details keeping the manufacturing process in mind
  • Keeping your drawings easy to read – it is important to ensure that your drawings are as comprehensive as possible so that they can be interpreted without an additional explanation
  • If you have the skillset, it is always best to check your calculations manually
  • Keep to the requirements and write them down - keep them in front of you during the designing process and don’t forget to keep them up to date!
  • Make sure everything can be assembled, ask yourself questions such as: Can someone reach a bolt with a spanner? Can a tight space be accessed?

Pricing:

  •  TOP TIP: Use Finite Element Analysis software to analyse the strength of the structure and avoid paying for unnecessary weight
  • Design for style - if the customer is paying £100,000 for your machine or construction it needs to look good! Looking good might be the edge in a competitive market
  • Design for price - you may design the most stylish machine but nobody will buy it if the price is double your competitor’s. Check the prices of different solutions to compare and make choices accordingly, ensuring you have this information is key to a successful design

Important steps for elevating your career:

  • Look at gaining exposure to more than one CAD package
  • Consider a change in engineering sector to broaden your skillset and experience
  • Seek work on flagship projects
  • Embrace new technology and keep yourself up to date with the latest trends
  • Demonstrate your leadership skills where possible

Setting goals:

  • Work towards chartered status - a fully chartered engineer is likely to earn more throughout their career than an engineer without this status
  • Be creative! Learn to think on your feet and come up with solutions that you can present to management and evidence your ability to problem solve
