Don't be squeamish, welcome to the bio-based society!

I gave this talk talk at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences.

We all know fossil fuels and many other raw materials will – eventually – run out. There's no way around it, we’re simply using them up faster than they're made. The transition to a sustainable, circular society and economy has started, but it's going to take many years yet to mature. This is partly owing to the fact that new technology and innovation is needed to make a circular economy possible. But it is also partly owing to the fact that we - the society - need to change. Are you willing to pay a few cents more for a plastic bag that will biodegrade? Would you eat a meal off a plate made of used loo paper? How do you feel about using chemicals made by bacteria out of sewage? The industry also needs to change the way it thinks and works. Can the waste my factory produces be used by a different industry as raw material? Can my product be made using biobased building blocks? We need to change the way we think and act to make the biobased society a reality.

I'm an expert in applying environmental microbiology in practice to achieve sustainable solutions. I've been involved in various national and international research and developmental projects aimed at creating new innovative technologies using natural biological processes.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
