A time to review company operating models?

With the process of the recent U.S. election mostly in our rear view, many are now considering potential changes as a result of the forthcoming new administration, and perhaps more importantly, what opportunities (and risks) might be around the corner. Aetna CEO Mark Bertolini said recently at the DealBook Conference in New York City:

"If you were to look at our game board of all the possible outcomes of the election, this one wasn't even on the sheet," Bertolini said. "We started with a fresh piece of paper yesterday. We had no idea how to approach it. We literally had to build out what would have taken us months if we thought it was possible."

As organizations look forward to potential changes as a result of the changing political landscape, now would be a good time to review (and where necessary plan & implement revisions to) operating models to ensure any foreseen risks can be turned into opportunities.

With so many U.S. based companies having significant investments in offshore resources as part of their overall operating strategies, serious analysis of risk and resulting financial impact should be undertaken. This is none more apparent when such a large number of organizations have so many of these vital resources offshore in the Indian marketplace.

From technology development to call center staff, data entry to business process operations, organizations would be very wise to plan & implement revised operating models that are less risky to growth, operational longevity and shareholder value.

As companies look to pursue alternatives, expectations should be that operating costs are likely to rise as a result of (re)unleashing domestic talent. However, with that rise in costs, organizations could also expect to realize gains from other value indicators such as improved vendor response times, enhanced communications effectiveness and additional capacity to leverage domestic talent networks.

Few are yet sure of what the future holds but one thing is for sure; the times they are a-changin'!
