Sustainability in chemistry only possible if we can eliminate scarcity of green carbon and energy

Brightsite is tackling the challenges of the circular industry transition head-on, focusing on the major scarcity issues of green energy, raw materials, and industrial water.

In the upcoming second edition of the Brightsite Transition Outlook (BTO), we take a systems approach using the Chemelot Integrated Model System (CIMS) to outline the need for renewable raw materials and energy, as well as possible filling variables in 2050. We are also developing specific technologies like Circular Water and Upwash to address the scarcity problem.

Read Arnold Stokking's testimonial and more about how the circular industry transition is taking shape step by step in the Brightsite newsletter.

Towards ‘zero emission & water intake’ at Chemelot

Brightsite is committed to a sustainable chemical industry. In addition to the transition to sustainable energy and green raw materials, circular water is also high on the agenda. To make the water system at Chemelot future-proof, cooperation between all stakeholders is essential. In collaboration with USG, Sitech , Royal HaskoningDHV and with input from the companies, Brightsite has created a ‘Roadmap Circular Water’. This roadmap lists possible interventions to significantly reduce emissions to surface water and water consumption.

A lot of plastic waste is needed to meet the demand that will arise to replace fossil resources. Within Brightsite, we are looking at what is needed to achieve more good, clean plastic waste. Upwash is one of the ways to extract more quality plastic from waste streams, thereby promoting circular development.

Chemelot wants to be the safest, most competitive, and sustainable chemical site in Western Europe by 2025. With 'BLIC vooruit', we are focusing on developing a predictive model for process safety. With the finalisation of the Safety Deal in December 2022, Brightsite can start researching and collecting data from several companies, such as Envalior (formerly DSM Engineering Materials).
