Representation matters. In the 90s and early 2000s, I remember the harmful stereotypes and bad representation of the queer community across all media platforms. The media portrayed bisexuals as promiscuous, gay men as flamboyant, and butch lesbians didn't even exist. Sadly, things didn't get better with time. Around 2015/2016, the "Bury Your Gays" trope reemerged, and showrunners started killing off queer characters across mainstream media for shock value. (I'm looking at you The Walking Dead and The 100)
Representation matters. In 2024 things have improved. Many showrunners have tried to earn our trust, and the queer community has tried to trust the media again. However, the fight for better representation continues. The cancellation of shows like A League of Their Own and Willow, both of which had excellent queer and POC/Black queer representation, is a testament to the fact that we still have a long way to go.
Representation matters. It's truly special to see yourself represented in books, on TV, or in movies. So, let's hope that with each passing decade, we'll get closer to better representation for all minorities.
Say it louder for the people in the back: REPRESENTATION MATTERS
