As Black women navigating the corridors of corporate America, we have encountered a recurring challenge which is the overwhelming need for 'face time' among our male colleagues. This behavior isn't just about being seen; it's a pervasive culture where male voices often overshadow ours, where their eagerness to speak and represent sometimes leaves little room for our contributions. In meetings, this dynamic unfolds subtly yet significantly. Our ideas are frequently eclipsed by louder voices, not due to their merit but often because of an ingrained bias about who should lead and who should follow. This dynamic isn't just disheartening; it's a stark reminder of the barriers we continually face. But why does this matter? Because it's more than just about being heard. It's about the value of diverse perspectives, the richness of varied experiences, and the innovation born from inclusive decision-making. When others marginalize our voices, the loss extends beyond the personal; it becomes a loss for the organization and its potential. So, how do we navigate this? Firstly, it's about solidarity among us. Building a support network within our professional circles can provide a platform for shared experiences and strategies. Secondly, advocating for inclusive practices in our workplaces is vital. Advocating includes pushing for meeting protocols that ensure equitable participation and fostering an environment where all voices are valued equally. Lastly, it's about empowerment. We must find our unique voice and the courage to assert it. We are not just good enough; we are essential. Our perspectives, born from a tapestry of unique experiences and challenges, are invaluable to the corporate narrative. I remember walking into that boardroom, feeling the weight of being the only Black woman. It's a reality that shouldn't need pointing out, but there I was, unmistakably different. It brings to mind Merline Saintil's words, "Most of my life, I was the only one. Often the first one." A sentiment that, sadly, many of us can nod along to, but it also shines a light on those who've dared to tread where few have before. Not long ago, I was deeply moved by "OnBoard," a film by Merline Saintil, Shannon Nash, Deborah Riley Draper and Lacy Barnes. It's not just a film; it's a journey. A journey of Black women in corporate spaces, from Patricia Roberts Harris in 1971 to our present day. Their stories, their challenges, their triumphs. But what followed the film was equally impactful. A panel discussion with Saintil and Nash, where they shared wisdom that wasn't just about career growth, but about finding your tribe: - Find Your Tribe: Those who amplify your mission and share your vision. - Understand the Business: Go beyond your comfort zone. Know what fuels your company, adds value for your clients, and drives the bottom line. - Live in Beta: Every day is a chance to innovate, to grow, to challenge yourself. - Broaden Your Horizons: Engage, connect, and build relationships that go beyond the professional. - Consistency is Key: Show up, every single day, no matter the challenges. To every young Black woman stepping into tech or any other field, know this: You're part of a lineage. Pioneers like Saintil and Nash have been there, and they're making sure you're not the last. They're not just leading the way; they're building a community. And it's this sense of community, of finding a new tribe, that fuels my passion and commitment to diversifying spaces, one boardroom at a time. We had the incredible opportunity to attend a thought-provoking “Phenomenal Women Panel” discussion on Black Women in Real Estate held at the Cushman & Wakefield office London. As non-technical women in the industry this event was an eye-opener, highlighting the unique experiences, challenges and triumphs of all types of Black women in a predominantly male-dominated sector.   Key takeaways from the event: 🔴 Representation Matters: Hearing from successful Black women in construction was truly inspiring. Their stories underscore the importance of true diversity and inclusion in the industry. 🔴 Breaking Barriers: The panellists shared their experiences of overcoming significant obstacles, from gender bias to racial discrimination, and their journeys are a testament to resilience and determination, whilst also highlighting the importance of retention, keeping women that look like us in the industry in hopes that it inspires the next generation of black women. 🔴 Mentorship and Support: A recurring theme was the crucial role of mentorship and support networks. Having a strong community and allies can make all the difference in navigating and succeeding in the industry. They gave specific advice on how to seek out mentorship and how it can be used to propel your career. Let’s talk: How many of us relate to Coco's experience in our own workplaces? ⬇️ As Black women, we often find ourselves facing the pressure of having to excel twice as much, all while adhering strictly to the rules.
