Weißkirchen Primary School, a historic Austrian building dating back to 1895 has recently undergone modernisation. This transformative project has created an open, architecturally stunning space perfect for modern learning. Our modern lighting solution also contributes to this. "The newly illuminated rooms are very bright, have a friendly atmosphere and a pleasant room climate. Optimum learning conditions for our students," says principal Karin Pichler. From the MIREL recessed LED luminaire to the ONDARIA circular luminaire: Our luminaires perfectly meet the needs of the users in the various learning zones - and are also significantly more energy-efficient than the previous models. Switch on your mind. Light on. Mind on. 👉https://lnkd.in/gzQZA2BV #education #newlearning #concentration #thelight #zumtobel #project #casestudy #weisskirchen #school

📗CAMPUS IN VIENNA - OPTIMISING THE TERRAIN FOR THE USERS🏔 The sloping terrain and the noisy location on the outskirts of Vienna posed a special challenge for our Vienna office: the new House of Engineering as part of the FH Campus Wien | University of Applied Sciences Wien rises on two levels out of the artificial terrain. The skilful use of the terrain makes it possible for the two parts of the building to offer teachers and students an interesting and unusual view of the city, while the orientation of the complex minimises the acoustic emissions from the nearby city exit. The S-shaped building structure also provides a solution for the organisation of the outdoor spaces, as they are protected by the cantilevered parts of the building. In addition, the view of the surrounding slope's stone-faced embankment offers an unusual experience in flat Vienna. The dynamic form of the building promises on the outside what it delivers on the inside: Flowing spaces lead via access zones to the classrooms, which can be enlarged and reduced in size as required. Inside, a city within the city has manifested itself, to quote the Viennese architect Josef Frank (1885-1967): "A well-organised house is to be laid out like a city with streets and paths that inevitably lead to squares that are shut off from traffic so that one can rest on them." The term "resting" can be relativised in a school. #baumschlagereberlearchitekten #Vienna #campus #school #education Say hello to our colleagues in vienna: https://lnkd.in/e3cmQ3tD Photos: Maximilian Haidacher

- it's such an honor to meet you, Jan, especially because I am doing a Ph.D. in the environmental psychology field, - then you will read this book twice! 😁 It is the usual facial expression when I tell somebody I am doing a Ph.D. 😁 This time, somebody is the legendary architect and urbanist Prof. Jan Gehl during a book signing at MO muziejus | MO Museum. Cities for people (Miestai žmonėms) book presentation highlights: Problems: ❗️While building cities, we usually do everything to make cars happy, so we live in 60 km/h architecture when we feel the most happy in 5km/h architecture; ❗️Famous buildings in cities look funny, like perfume bottles, and fit for covers of architecture magazines; ❗️We plan buildings from a helicopter view, not from a personal view (human scale); ❗️modernistic architecture has no concern for people and social life. “I was at the funeral of modernism,”- said Jan Gehl. Solutions: ✅ it is crucial to build human-centric, livable cities; ✅ It is essential to ask people how they feel in the space; ✅ city life must include spaces for meeting, for slow mobility (walking and cycling), places to stop and dwell and sit and watch the world go by; ✅ we should create livable, sustainable, healthy cities, good cities to be old in. #peoplecentric #peoplecities Leidykla LAPAS (LAPAS books)

Through the design of functional green areas, the aim is to create a more fluid connectivity between the different spaces of the campus, which are sometimes fragmented and divided by public roads. Green therefore acts as both a visual and spatial connector. The graphic icon system was developed with the aim of communicating the functional green areas in the clearest and most immediate way possible, aiming to make them recognizable and understandable for future users of the campus. #amaart #bfeducational #innovation #green #visualidentity #formazione #ricerca #grafic #innovazione #campus #landscape #sostenibile #design #wayfinding #signage #greenery #designproposal #beautifularchitecture #sustainable #sustainablearchitecture #sustainablesolutions #futureproof #innovation #architecturetender #urbandevelopment #urbancore #naturalwayfinding

Yesterday we hosted the second round table in our 'Life Science Summer Sessions', this time with a focus on 'Sustainable Labs in the City'. Discussion centered on what a ‘sustainable lab’ really means in a central London context. The round table explored the respective carbon benefits of refurbished spaces versus new-build lab buildings and the opportunities to incorporate circular design strategies into both the fit out of lab spaces and into their daily operational consumption. The importance of a thorough evaluation of a project’s technical brief and the collation of operational data from existing labs buildings was agreed to be a critical learning process for future projects, especially given the speed at which this highly technical typology continues to evolve. The question of timber construction for lab buildings proved an interesting discussion for the group who weighed up the sustainability benefits of timber against the technical constraints and how we might adapt timber buildings to meet the specific challenges of life sciences. This event formed part of Piercy&Company's 'Life Science Summer Sessions 2023' and is part of our ongoing research around place-making in complex urban locations and resilient sustainability. Thank you so much to all who attended this fascinating discussion. #Lifescience #labarchitecture #labdesign

Streets that are better for climate (resilience and carbon capture!) for biodiversity, for people. Did you know that the greenbelt is less biodiverse than parts of London? This is an interesting thought when we consider where and how we build homes for people, and what ‘protecting green spaces’ really means. Creating new ones is just as important. Back to this picture, top of my list is Trafalgar Square. Yours?
For better streets, we do not need more space. We also do not need new technologies or tools. What we need is imagination and courage. -#Sheffield, via Biophilic Design

FORM FOLLOWS LIFE REINVENTING CITIES DESIGNING FOR LIFE In this competition, we challenge participants to reimagine urban spaces through the lens of life (including human, plant and animal). Proposals should develop an approach to shape cities as systems supporting life and enhancing its relational qualities, rather than as productive and efficient ‘machines’. Participants are invited to submit designs that showcase the transformation of urban spaces into thriving ecosystems that respect and reflect the complex interdependencies of life. The designs should explore radical approaches towards the rethinking and designing of urban spaces. / towards “form follows life” (principle inviting form to promote and enhance life’s web of relationships, interdependence, and mutual thriving - Olivia Bina inspired by Gilles Clément and Patrick Geddes).
