Even at the highest levels of business, people still need to learn the basics of strategic communication. I had two great opportunities this week to help this cause along. Earlier this week, I taught in an executive program on strategic communication and leadership at Tuck for Amway executives, who came to Hanover from all over the world. The next day, my former Tuck colleague and now Kaplan executive, Kaitlin Dumont (pictured) interviewed me at the Ed Tech Week conference, which was held at Google in NYC. The group I met with was mostly founders of Ed Tech businesses. The conversation was amazing and focused on communicating in startups and entrepreneurial ventures. But in both cases, the questions I got showed me that so many people still need to learn the fundamentals of strategic communication: who is your audience, what are you trying to get them to do, what is the right channel, and how do you measure success? I feel so blessed that I get to spend my time teaching others this valuable information. It’s so gratifying to me that they can use what they’ve learned immediately – to become better leaders and to help their organizations become more successful. No matter how far along you are in your career, you can always gain value from sharpening your skills in strategic communication.

Sometimes bold leadership means letting others lead. It can feel risky to delegate completely and let others shape the organization. Kashish Gupta did just that-- letting his best engineers define the culture of the engineering team. This in the context of a company culture that prioritizes customers needs. Most companies hire the best engineers they can. At Hightouch, they hire engineers who understand their job isn't solving technical problems. It's solving customer problems. A blend of top-down culture (customer first) and bottoms-up culture (driven by the best engineers) creates a winning formula for them.
