Two decades ago, when David Wilson and Rob Compton tied the knot amidst a storm of controversy surrounding America's first state-sanctioned same-sex marriages, many feared the apocalypse. Fast forward to today: Wilson and Compton, now happily retired, spend their days volunteering and cherishing moments with their grandchildren. As we mark the 20th anniversary of those historic Massachusetts marriages, it's remarkable to see how attitudes have evolved. What was once a contentious political battleground has gradually faded into the background, with nearly three-quarters of Americans now supporting same-sex marriage, including a significant portion of Republicans and regular churchgoers. Contrary to the doomsday predictions of opponents, a recent study by the Rand organization reveals overwhelmingly positive outcomes from two decades of legal same-sex marriage. From improved health and financial security for both gay and straight couples to increased rates of marriage among heterosexual pairs, the evidence speaks volumes. For younger generations, the fight for marriage equality might seem like ancient history, but for those who lived through it, the journey was transformative. As Evan Wolfson, founder of Freedom to Marry, reflects, the inclusion of same-sex couples in the institution of marriage sparked a profound shift in societal attitudes. Yet, even as we celebrate this milestone, the struggle for LGBTQ rights continues on other fronts, from transgender rights to inclusive school curricula. The journey toward equality is far from over, but as we look back on how far we've come, it's clear that love, in all its forms, prevails. 🏳️🌈 #MarriageEquality #LGBTQ

We join the celebration of Women's Month with a series of posts honoring women as seen through the eyes of the law! Let’s begin by exploring women’s rights to her name. For generations, it has been customary for Filipino women to embrace their husband's surname upon marriage, a symbol of unity and familial belonging. Yet, as societal landscapes evolve and the principles of gender equality gain prominence, the legal framework has adapted to accommodate diverse expressions of identity within the institution of marriage. The decision to retain one's maiden name or adopt a spouse's surname is deeply personal, reflecting a myriad of cultural, familial, and professional considerations. To help with this decision, learn about the legal basis and consequences of taking, or not taking, the husband’s name after marriage. Access our full article at: https://lnkd.in/gy_9AerW

#TheMorningInclusive Nine Years of Marriage Equality in Ireland Today marks a significant milestone in the journey towards equality and inclusivity. On this day in 2015, Ireland made history by legalizing same-sex marriage, becoming the first country to do so through a popular referendum. The Irish people spoke loud and clear, with 62% voting in favor of love and equality. The importance of this day cannot be overstated. It was not just a win for the LGBTIQ community in Ireland but a beacon of hope for those fighting for their rights worldwide. It showed that change is possible when people come together to support love in all its forms. The message was simple yet powerful: Love is Love. Equality is not just a concept; it’s a fundamental human right. The legalization of same-sex marriage in Ireland was a step towards recognizing that all love is equal, and everyone deserves the right to marry the person they love. It was a celebration of diversity and a rejection of outdated prejudices. Belonging is about feeling accepted and valued for who you are. The movement for marriage equality in Ireland was as much about belonging as it was about legal rights. It was about creating a society where everyone can feel at home, regardless of who they love. As we reflect on this historic event, let’s remember the importance of continuing to fight for equality, not just for the LGBTIQ community but for all marginalized groups. Let’s strive to create a world where everyone feels they belong, where diversity is celebrated, and where love is never questioned. On this anniversary, let’s recommit to the principles of equality, love, and belonging. Let’s work together to build a more inclusive world where everyone can live openly and authentically. Because, in the end, love wins. #LGBTIQEquality #LoveIsLove #Belonging #Inclusion #Diversity #Equity #Accessibility

29th March 2014. That’s when the first same-sex marriage occurred in England and Wales. When it comes to landmark pieces of legislation, the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act 2013 is up there, cementing the tireless efforts of those campaigning for the rights of LGBTQ couples to be afforded the right to marry. Since then, attitudes in society have changed dramatically, and there’s no doubt that positive progress has been made. As we celebrate Pride Month, it’s a good time to reflect on how far we’ve come and the progress the world still needs to make regarding same-sex marriage. Made In Heaven is not perfect in its second season. In fact it is very woke, almost activist in its focus on LGBTQ issues. But its focus- on deepest social prejudice in India- matters. It addresses long over due conversations about gender in our society. Here's my take for firstpost #blogpost #womeninfilm #webseries #gender #storytelling #primevideo https://lnkd.in/dTnpmFR7
