In my Substack for this week, we're talking about how to observe Juneteenth without being performative. Here's something to consider: What Not to Do This should go without saying, but just in case: don’t put the burden or labor on your Black employees to plan your Juneteenth celebration. That means that if you are non-Black and you are planning your Juneteenth observation, do your own research. Do not do a Juneteenth celebration until you have really explored and understood what this holiday means. Invite anyone who would like to participate in planning to join you. It’s okay to ask for help. If a non-Indian were planning a Diwali celebration at work and didn’t ask for my input, I’d probably think that was weird. Don’t expect any special appreciation or acknowledgement for observing Juneteenth. And of course, don’t be upset or take it personally if you don’t quite get the observation right. If people give you feedback on how to do it better next year, try to listen and understand. If people tell you that something was wrong or offensive, just listen and learn. Apologize for your mistake and commit to changing. And do better next time. #Juneteenth #inclusion #dei For more visit and subscribe here: https://lnkd.in/eczN-txY

ELT Writer and Teacher Trainer - Author of 100 course books and online courses. Trained 5000 teachers. Using my experience to help ELT educators and writers develop their materials writing skills
Thought of the day! I've had a couple of conversations over the past few days about Christmas, and whether it's OK to say 'Merry Christmas' on SM sites like LI because perhaps we (ELT professionals) shouldn't be so 'western' in our outlook and we should remember that millions of people around the world don't celebrate Christian holidays. One person was telling me that she finds it much easier to say 'Happy Hannukah' or 'Happy Diwali' or 'Eid Mubarak', despite the fact that she isn't Jewish, Hindu or Muslim. She can't bring herself to post a 'Merry Christmas'. I've been thinking about this and I think we've muddied the waters a bit. As a materials writer and educator I do think we need to be mindful of our approach to religious and traditional festivals in our materials, so that we aren't making assumptions or excluding people. But as human beings, we should be able to wish everyone who celebrates it, 'Merry Christmas'. In doing so, we aren't saying Christian festivals are more important than any others. We're just sending out a greeting to all those who celebrate. So I won't be minding my words when the time comes. I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts (whether you agree or disagree of course 😊) #teachingenglish #teachersoflinkedin #equalitydiversityinclusion

It's a special day of joy and reflection, honoring African American freedom and heritage. In the tourism and hospitality industry, recognizing Juneteenth is about embracing and encouraging diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). It means making sure all visitors and employees feel respected and valued, no matter their background. Celebrating Juneteenth can also make travel more interesting and meaningful by highlighting important historical sites, supporting Black businesses and stories from African American history. How do you plan to celebrate Juneteenth this year?
