Why is it important for developers to be responsible for looking after the software they produce? 🤔 One of the reasons is because some of the most valuable lessons come from being on-call, when your site goes down and the company is losing money 🔥 To be an excellent engineer and a truly valuable asset to your team, you have to learn how to work and make decisions under pressure to minimise any negative impacts (and I’m not talking about the kind of pressure that comes from being understaffed - that’s not on you, that’s on your management). Another benefit of “you build it, you own it” approach is knowing exactly which team/individual is responsible for which service or application, and therefore knowing whose job it is to fix it when things go down. 🇺🇦 Dmitri L. and his loveholidays team seem to have nailed this as they don’t waste any time pointing fingers and looking for someone to blame, but rather resolve any issues in a fast, efficient manner and learn in the process 👏

Meet Campbell Alexander, Altruist’s Head of Brokerage Support Read below for his employee spotlight 👇 Q: In your time at Altruist, what has been your favorite project? A: "I had the awesome opportunity to build the Brokerage Support Team from the ground up. My role involved being the bridge between Customer Success, Engineering, Product, Operations, and other teams within our firm. Handling urgent issues, ensuring a smooth Start Of Day process, and providing top-notch support were all part of the gig, helping everyone sleep a little better at night!" Q: In a professional sense, what motivates you every day? A: My amazing co-workers. There have been those overwhelming times when we were sailing through rough waters, but their constant encouragement and support helped us weather the storm. Just a simple word of encouragement from them can make all the difference, and I feel so fortunate to be part of such an incredible team. Q: What's your favorite aspect of Fintech? A: “My favorite aspect about fintech has to be the sheer ingenuity behind the platforms, especially Altruist’s. People usually just see the end product, but what amazes me is the dedicated team of rockstars, including Product, Design, Engineering, QA, DevOps, Compliance, Customer Success, Operations, and others, who work hard to make it all happen. Without their brilliance, fintech wouldn't have come this far, and it's exciting to be a part of this dynamic and innovative industry.” Ready to join our team of incredible individuals like Campbell? A software engineer shared on Reddit that he wanted to quit after just 1 month on the job. So I copied his post here for discussion: "After 6 months of job search (2 years exp.) I got a job... and it sucks! Are you familiar with the quote "We don't truly appreciate what we have until it's gone"? This is where I am. The follow is not a joke, drill, or troll and all exist in the codebase I am magically solely responsible (the previous person left): * HUGE codebase (think 10 projects in Visual Studio) * NO testing whatsoever * I have to manually test everything * Classes with names like FirstClass and FirstClass1 * no code reviews * They used to work on one branch and commit on it directly - which is also the live branch * I tried to open a new branch to work on a feature and got scolded for it * The "code review" is my staff engineer logging in using teamviewer to see if everything's fine * We don't follow agile but there's a 45-minute long meeting every day between 4 people (myself included) * Documentation is 4 pages long and that's mostly whitespace At this point I want to run away and never return, but I don't have enough money in my bank. I tried to suggest them to slowly fix things but they pretend like I didn't say anything. So now I'm stuck onboarding myself in an unfamiliar to me stack (they didn't mind, which I thought it's cool at that time). I get that the advice will be "grind outside of work and keep job searching" but it's been only 1 month in and I must include the company as previous experience (the way it works in my country is, they can tell if I was employed and how long for health insurance). Will I look like a RED FLAG since I'm job searching just as I got a new job? I don't want to get into the badmouthing game and talk about why I want to leave." --- What do you think? What would you do if you were him? What should the company do?
