I developed the phrase Sovereignty Before Solidarity long ago because I could easily spot how superficial many allyship practices, and even solidarity and multi-identity coalition-building movements were. These movements were negotiated by very specific touch points, where individuals were assigned to negotiate between communities, without much actual trust. As an analogy, where these communities should have intersected like a zipper, it appeared more like diamonds with their tips meeting. The idea was for folks to develop the power in their spaces, and when the time was right to come to the table as equals to discuss communal needs, find common ground, and advocate for needs each other's unique needs that weren't of the common interest. But in the meantime, there would be a heightened degree of communal self-reliance, and success would hopefully begin to be shared and replicated across communities in order to achieve the critical mass we needed for systemic change, common purpose. The zipper would start forming. But now as inter-communal bonds are rupturing, we are regressing back to the divisive cultural battles that everyone loves to hate. Welcome to the era of irritation.

Check out this important piece in eJewishPhilanthropy by Elana W..
Our Executive Director Elana W. offers some reflections from the past few months – since the tragedies of October 7 shook our world. Read her op-ed in eJewishPhilanthropy as she tries to answer these impossible questions: • How do we move forward after the unthinkable? • How do we continue to partner in community after the crushing silence from our allies? • How do we find hope that we can move towards the light once again? "We don’t turn away from the darkness. We face it. We don’t push away those who have been silent, we call them in. We don’t stay enshrouded by gloom and doom. We move forward. // We get informed, lift up our voices, invest in healing and resiliency, and continue to advocate for a better, safer, and more respectful world." - Elana Wien https://lnkd.in/eFQwKYGB

On June 21, #NationalIndigenousPeoplesDay, we honor the history, culture, and contributions of Indigenous communities across Turtle Island, including Innu and Inuit communities, acknowledging their collective, traditional, and unceded territories. As a network engaged in substance use research, we embrace the guiding principle of Etuaptmumk - Two-Eyed Seeing as shared by Elders Albert and Murdena Marshall, integrating Indigenous knowledge with Western science to foster holistic insights and promote continuous commitment to learn, engage and share knowledge. Today, we celebrate the profound impacts Indigenous peoples have had on our world. By embracing Indigenous ways of knowing, we continue to rebuild and strengthen the networks of wisdom that have stood the test of time. We honor and support Indigenous businesses, artists, and cultural heritage, recognizing the invaluable contributions these bring to our shared future. Together, we work to co-create a future where all communities thrive. Let's persist with our dedication to justice, healing, and unity. #IndigenousPeoplesDay #TwoEyedSeeing #Reconciliation #DecolonizeResearch

The City of Peace Movement International Cities of Peace is an association of citizens, governments and organizations who have established their communities as official Cities of Peace by proclamation, resolution, or citizen advocacy. Every community has a legacy of peace, whether through a historical event or local peace heroes or groups who have contributed to their citizen’s safety, prosperity and quality of life. No city is 100% a city of peace, instead, all are on the path to “becoming” a more peaceful city. Establishing a community as a peace city recognizes past achievements, encourages current initiatives, and inspires future generations for practical peace-building.
