☄ The first results of my doctoral work have been published in Physical Review B! 🔗 "Local electronic excitations induced by low-velocity light ion stopping in tungsten" [https://lnkd.in/dqURg2qg] In this study, we investigated the electronic stopping power of hydrogen and helium ions in tungsten—a crucial material for future nuclear fusion devices. By integrating real-time time-dependent density functional theory with experimental methods, in collaboration with colleagues from Uppsala University, we gained valuable insights into trajectory-dependent variations and features of electronic energy losses in the low-energy range. Dynamic Nuclear Polarization (DNP) is cutting edge in hyperpolarization techniques. The technology transfers magnetization from abundant electrons spins to far less sensitive nuclei, potentially driving signal ehancement within several orders of magnitude. The electron polarization is generated by microwaves close to the electron para-magnetic resonance (EPR) and can transfer magnetization through 4 different mechanisms depending on the experiment; the Overhauser effect, the solid effect, thermal mixing or the cross effect. Currently, due to cost and overall accessibility, it is not a common form of NMR spectroscopy. I am excited to see all the new discoveries that will transpire, a result of more accessibility to these instruments! Every new installation is an exciting prospect!

I am happy to share an article just published in the Open-Access journal, in which we - a team of international scientists from Latvia, France and Italy (Sardinia) - offer a new technology for generating electricity in extremely distant Space missions in places far from the Sun. The solution is a conceptually new and exotic electric generator design, compared to the one defended in my PhD thesis. The device works using a small nuclear reactor, creating liquid metal oscillations in the magnetic field. All this happens thanks to a unique and relatively rare technology - the Thermoacoustic Engine. The next step that will follow - experimental validation of the proposed concept! On this day in science the first microscopic amount of americium (Am) was made. This radioactive metal was first produced by B.B. Cunningham and L.B. Werner. Most americium is produced by bombarding uranium (U) or plutonium (Pu) with alpha particles – one tonne of spent nuclear fuel contains about 100 grams of americium.
