As Texas continues to experience rapid population growth and an expanding business footprint, the need for a reliable and resilient power grid becomes ever more critical. Recent developments shed light on the path forward, addressing both immediate and long-term challenges. ERCOT Grid Reforms: In the wake of extensive legislative discussions, various stakeholders in the electricity market—generators, industrial and commercial users, residential customers, regulators, and politicians—are now focused on implementing directives from the Texas Legislature. The goal is a reliable power grid at the lowest feasible price. The anticipated growth of the state's electricity load to 150,000 megawatts by 2030 underscores the urgency of these efforts. Initiatives like the Texas Energy Fund aim to accelerate the construction of dispatchable power plants, along with new reliability standards and market mechanisms to prepare the ERCOT grid for future demands. Leadership Appointments: Governor Greg Abbott has appointed El Paso businessman Paul Foster to the ERCOT Board Selection Committee. Foster, a former chairman of the ERCOT Board of Directors, brings valuable experience to this role, having served on various statewide boards and led numerous organizations. His leadership is expected to strengthen ERCOT's efforts in managing around 90% of Texas' electric load, ensuring robust governance and strategic decision-making. Texans' Concerns: A recent poll by the Texas Politics Project reveals that more than half of Texans fear a widespread grid failure this summer. ERCOT's reports highlight potential risky conditions, especially in August when demand peaks. These concerns remind us of the vulnerabilities in our current infrastructure and the need for comprehensive strategies to enhance grid reliability and resilience. “The only way to predict the future is to create it.” — Peter Drucker Texas stands at a pivotal moment. By implementing immediate reforms, considering strategic long-term solutions like grid interconnection, and addressing the genuine concerns of Texans, we can work towards a more reliable and efficient energy future. It’s time for bold decisions and collaborative efforts to secure our energy infrastructure. Grid Monitor is free to try. Larry Gasteiger's emphatic call to action on transmission investment in T&D World: "I have often said that we will need the equivalent of a wartime effort if we are to build out the grid on the aggressive timetable needed to meet ambitious clean energy mandates and goals. During World War II as Britain stood alone against German forces, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill pleaded with the American government, 'Give us the tools, and we will finish the job.' The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission has the tools today in its regulatory toolchest to incentivize the large-scale investment in transmission that is critically necessary in the decades ahead. FERC needs to use those tools, and help finish the job." https://lnkd.in/exthfC-E #gridofthefuture #cleangrid #transmission #gridreliability

Electric utility rates are going up all over the US but especially in the Northeast. This is a letter to the editor of the CT Examiner posted by Eversource’s VP of Supply about the unprecedented electricity bill increases customers are experiencing in CT. He explains the complex causes including longstanding state regulatory policies that force Eversource to estimate revenues and costs from year old data and then push the difference between estimated and actual to customers who can experience increases whether a deficit or surplus. There doesn't seem to be a definitive or quick path to fix so this looks to unavoidably continue for the foreseeable future. If you are experiencing these escalating rate increases, we’ve helped many companies and institutions dramatically cut and lock in energy costs by producing highly reliable, clean electricity onsite and we can do the same for your company.
In the CT Examiner, our Vice President of Energy Supply James Daly explains the factors behind our recent rate proposal, and how we are collaborating with state officials in hopes of preventing rate shock for our customers this year and in the future. “It’s complex, but one thing is certain—the facts are different than headlines suggest.” Read more 👇

As we face another blistering Texas summer, the urgency to fortify our energy grid’s resilience and reliability has never been more apparent. Recent developments highlight the path forward, but they also reveal the complexities we must navigate. Here’s the current situation: ERCOT’s ECRS Program Reform: ERCOT’s recent approval of the ECRS program reform is a double-edged sword. While the initiative is crucial to prevent blackouts like those in February 2021, the estimated $12.5 billion cost to utilities in 2023 raises valid concerns. However, the long-term benefits of a stable and reliable grid outweigh these costs. Balancing financial impacts with grid stability is essential, and this reform is a step in the right direction, even if it requires fine-tuning. Connecting Texas to the National Grid: Congressman Greg Casar’s “Connect the Grid Act” is a game-changer. The MIT study supporting this act suggests that linking Texas’s grid to the national network could have prevented up to 80% of the blackouts during Winter Storm Uri. The potential savings of up to $1.24 billion annually and the significant CO2 reductions make this a compelling argument for interconnection. Embracing this change could transform our grid’s reliability and economic efficiency, fostering a more resilient energy future. Texans’ Concerns: The recent poll by the Texas Politics Project reveals that over half of Texans fear a widespread electrical grid failure this summer. This sentiment is a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities we still face. ERCOT’s warnings about risky conditions, especially in August, highlight the need for urgent and comprehensive strategies. We must prioritize robust solutions to ensure our grid can withstand extreme weather and high demand. Texas stands at a pivotal moment. By implementing immediate reforms, considering strategic long-term solutions like grid interconnection, and addressing the genuine concerns of Texans, we can work towards a more reliable and efficient energy future.
