Thirty years ago, on September 25th, ESA Space Solutions Portugal’s first Portuguese satellite – PoSAT-1 – was launched, a project in which Efacec was involved and that put Portugal on the map of the aerospace industry. 🛰 To celebrate this historic date, the conference ‘30 Years of PoSAT-1: The Past and the Future of Portugal in Space’, organized by Portugal Space | Agência Espacial Portuguesa, brought together personalities who contributed to the success of PoSAT-1, alongside other important figures from the Portuguese #space ecosystem. Arlindo Marques, from Efacec’s #Automation team and #MAGAL Constellation project manager, took part in the debate about projects that have been and/or are being designed within the scope of international partnerships. The MAGAL Constellation project, led by Efacec, is the first worldwide project regarding the design of a satellite network in the New Space domain to monitor the oceans through #radaraltimetry. PoSAT-1 stopped emitting signals in 2006, after 13 years of activity. Now, it’s travelling silently in orbit around the Earth, with expected end and consequent re-entry into atmosphere in 2043. We are proud to be part of the Portuguese aerospace history, another demonstration of how we have been innovating for 75 years. On March 27, 2024, ISRO Chairman S. Somnath was hosted by the European Space Agency - ESA in Paris, France, where he presented the vision for India’s ambitious space programs. To foster a strong ISRO-ESA relationship, the chairman proposed collaboration in various fields of space programs. ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher also applauded ISRO for its achievements in space exploration in recent years, especially the Chandrayaan-3. The director, Aschbacher, said in his briefing that Somnath’s presentations on various endeavors by ISRO are truly eye-openers. He recalled his discussion with Somnath back in 2022, wherein they discussed various ways the two agencies could collaborate and intensify their cooperation on various space domains. As an initiation to these collaborative efforts, a week-long delegation visited ISRO to discuss various opportunities in space exploration and scientific findings. An agreement in July 2021 facilitated ISRO’s access to ESA’s ground stations for ISRO missions, primarily for Chandrayaan-3 and Aditya-L1, in exchange for ESA’s access to ISRO tracking stations. Presently, India is also extending its cooperation with the United States. Since India's emergence as a signatory to the Artemis Accord in June 2023, the two countries have significantly delved into various projects. ISRO is prominently developing a framework for human space flight and creating possibilities for sending an Indian astronaut to the International Space Station. This serves as a beacon of inspiration for the global space community and upcoming generations to dream big and reach for the stars. I had the chance to attend the ILA Space Fair in Berlin for Space Debris DAO , and it was an experience to remember! Here's a glimpse into what made this year's event so special: 🚀 Ariane 6 Rocket Showcase 🚀 A major highlights was the presentation of the Ariane 6 rocket by Airbus and ArianeGroup. This next-generation launch vehicle represents a significant step for Europe with its innovative, lightweight carbon fibre structures. The Ariane 6 is set to ensure Europe’s autonomous access to space, catering to both heavy and light payloads. It is not reusable and perhaps not quite the transformative launching-leap forward that would propell Europe to the top of the worlds leading launchers. Yet, it is a remarkable improvement and a testament to Europes commitment to build great stuff together. 🌍 Zero Debris Charter Signing 🌍 A historic moment at ILA 2024 was the signing of the Zero Debris Charter. Representatives from 40 companies, research centres, and committed to sustainable space activities. This initiative, led by European Space Agency - ESA , aims to mitigate space debris and ensure the long-term sustainability of space operations. ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher and former astronaut Thomas Reiter were present to endorse this vital step towards a sustainable future. 🔭 Innovative Exhibits and Displays 🔭 The event also featured the ILA TALENT HUB, which focused on career opportunities in aerospace, interactive workshops, and keynotes by industry experts like ESA reserve astronaut Nicola Winter. Additionally, visitors enjoyed exploring the world's largest passenger aircraft, the A380, and learning about advanced air mobility solutions. 🎉🎉🎉 Some of my personal highlights were: ✨ ESA BIC Pitches: Engaging discussions on space sustainability with the pitching founders from the ESA Business Incubation was a personal highlight for me. They shared their innovative solutions and ideas that could shape the future of space activities. 🎤 Interviewing Max, Ariane 6 Upper Stage Engineer: I had the privilege of interviewing Max, an engineer involved in the development of the upper stage of Ariane 6 in Bremen. Stay tuned for the video interview, which I will be posting soon! 😊 🤝Unexpectedly Meeting a LinkedIn contact: I ran into Utsav Pandya , whom I knew from a Space Debris DAO meeting. 🛰  📡According to The Portugal News, the first images captured by the Portuguese #nanosatellite #AerosMH-1, sent into space on 4 March, have already been received, according to the company Thales Edisoft Portugal and CEiiA // Centre of Engineering and Product Development. Positioned 510 kilometers above sea level, slightly above the International Space Station, the astronauts' "home", the nanosatellite will observe the #AtlanticOcean in particular for three years. The MH-1, a 4.5-kilo nanosatellite whose name pays homage to the former Minister of Science Manuel Heitor, considered by the consortium to be the driving force behind the project, is the second Portuguese satellite to be sent into space, after PoSat-1, a 50-kilo microsatellite that entered Earth's orbit in September 1993 but was deactivated after a decade. The national Aeros MH-1 consortium includes several Portuguese companies and academic institutions, which are joined by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States, through the MIT Portugal Program. The CEiiA // Centre of Engineering and Product Development in Matosinhos, one of the partners and which built the nanosatellite, will process the data and images for scientific studies. The Universidade do Algarve, Porto and Minho, the Instituto Superior Técnico, and #Imar - Instituto do Mar, among others, provide scientific support to the mission. 🚀 Exciting times for the Spanish space industry! Miguel Belló, acting director of the recently established Spanish Space Agency (AEE), delivered an insightful speech highlighting the tremendous growth potential for Spain's aerospace sector. 🛰️ At the Space & Defense Industry Sevilla Summit, Belló emphasized the AEE's role as a global ambassador for Spain's space industry, underscoring the creation of significant strategic opportunities. With projects in the pipeline surpassing €5 billion, the focus is on fostering synergies and optimizing resources. Key initiatives include gaining autonomy in space access with a €45 million national vector for launching small satellites and the pivotal Atlantic Constellation project, potentially expanding to include the UK and Greece. This project aims to monitor climate change and manage natural disaster emergencies through a low-orbit network. Moreover, the upcoming ESA tender for the mass production of satellites signifies a shift towards industrial-scale manufacturing. The ambitious €125 million QKD (Quantum Key Distribution) project sets the stage for a new era of secure communication from geostationary and low Earth orbits. Belló also highlighted the strategic European response to American mega constellations with the IRIS2 project, predicting a budget growth up to €20 billion, ensuring a robust system for secure connectivity. The formation of the AEE has opened doors to numerous global opportunities, demonstrated by recent agreements with NASA and discussions with international space agencies. As Spain forges a national space strategy and plans to initiate a national space program with an initial €70 million budget, the future looks bright. The goal is to align with the contributions to ESA while fostering Spain's autonomous growth in the sector. Today marks a major milestone in space collaboration for Europe Space Agency (ESA) and Starlab as they sign an MoU to work together. 🎉 📝 The MoU outlines plans to collaborate on joint experiments, using both ground and space-based assets, working together on data analysis and sharing the results of their experiments. This collaboration is particularly noteworthy as it is a step towards mutual scientific goals in achieving greater understanding of how certain parameters of the Earth's atmosphere behaves over time.🌎 ESA and Starlab are now officially working together in what promises to be an exciting development in European space exploration and research. Lately, all eyes have been on Danish ESA astronaut Andreas Mogensen’s work at the international space station 👨🚀 🇩🇰 But did you know that Denmark conducts world class space research at our universities and serves as a home for many promising space tech companies, making us well-positioned to benefit from the fast-growing space tech industry? This was the focal point of Morten Larsen's recent space presentations at the Global Tech Trends Conference and TechBBQ, where we updated Danish stakeholders on cutting-edge US technology. - Space technology is predicted to be a billion-dollar industry by 2030 with the private space sector developing rapidly these years. NASA’s ambitious goals to go the Moon, Mars, and beyond stimulates demand for new technologies and solutions. Often these technologies find broad application in society at a later stage - e.g. Velcro and solar panels. Yet, the most promising commercial opportunities in space lie in lower launch costs and the rise of small satellites. By 2030, small satellites in lower orbit will multiply. We can anticipate a treasury of new solutions built around GPS, earth observation, and satellite communication, says Morten Larsen, Senior Innovation Advisor, Digital Technologies & Entrepreneurship at Innovation Centre Denmark in Silicon Valley. ICDK Silicon Valley is actively helping Danish stakeholders capitalize on space tech. In partnership with the Consulate General of Denmark in Houston, the Danish Ministry of Higher Education and Science, ESA BIC Denmark, CenSec - Center for Defence, Space & Security, and DI - Dansk Industri, we recently hosted 35 Danish stakeholders within space in Houston. 📅Save the date!   The European Space Agency - ESA's HAPS4ESA workshop will be taking place on 12-14 February 2024 in Leiden, Netherlands – and we’re inviting all interested parties from industry, academia and regulatory bodies to participate!   High Altitude Pseudo Satellites (HAPS) are uncrewed platforms operating at an altitude of approximately 20 kilometres in the stratosphere, making them a new and attractive technology to fill the gap between terrestrial and space systems.
