While this year’s numbers are slightly lower than previous year-over-year increases in the homeless count, they continue a steady growth trend of unhoused individuals in LA. Dear Friend,   As the year draws to a close, we at The Waterfront Project (WFP) are taking a moment to reflect on the vital work that’s been accomplished and the lives that have been touched, thanks to supporters like you.   In the past year, our dedicated team has grown to 30 full-time employees, all committed to preventing homelessness, preserving affordable housing, and promoting neighborhood stability. Together, we have served over 2,000 clients this year, dedicating 10,000 hours to ensure that everyone receives the attention and support they need.   When we break down the numbers, it reveals the depth of our commitment: on average, we spend approximately 4.91 hours per client, with a median time of 2.46 hours. This demonstrates our unwavering dedication to providing personalized and thorough support for every client we serve.   But what does this mean in terms of resources? Our eight attorneys, who are at the heart of our legal services, incur an annual personnel cost of nearly $1,000,000. When we divide this by the number of clients we serve annually, it equates to approximately $670.00 per client. This modest figure encapsulates the investment we make in each client’s future – an investment in dignity, stability, and hope.   However, this impact is only possible with your support. BY CORIE BROWN | Los Angeles Times Earlier this fall, the chief executives of several local foundations gathered at the Southern California Grantmakers offices to discuss expanding their efforts to combat L.A.’s growing homelessness crisis. The featured speakers were Peter Laugharn, president and CEO of the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, and Elise Buik, president and CEO of United Way of Greater Los Angeles, both fervent believers that homelessness in L.A. can be, “rare, brief and nonrecurring” — a catchphrase among philanthropists deeply involved in housing issues. The attendees, many of whom had to stand shoulder to shoulder along the walls in the too-small room, stayed for the entire 90-minute meeting. Wealthy L.A. philanthropists loosen grip on donations, shifting money toward social justice. “It’s easy to be overwhelmed by the scale of the housing problem in L.A.,” says Scott Koch, executive director of Reissa Foundation, a $65-million Santa Monica-based family foundation dedicated to improving the lives of vulnerable populations. But it “fuels my optimism,” he says, to hear what’s happening on the ground to solve homelessness. Catholic Charities supports Senate Bill (SB) 4, for Affordable Housing on Faith Lands. We remain committed to #advocacy for policies that ensure affordable housing for Californians, especially those who live in poverty and face homelessness. Senate Bill 4 would reduce barriers that nonprofit organizations often face when planning multifamily housing projects on their properties, such as local zoning regulations and the state's stringent environmental review process, which can add years to the process. ‘Not done yet’: Dallas’ homeless program places more than 2,700 people in housing. Housing Forward, which serves Dallas and Collin counties, announced Tuesday it reached its initial goal for the program. "Two years after the launch of Dallas’ rapid rehousing program, more than 2,700 people across Dallas and Collin counties have received housing, thanks to private philanthropy dollars and public partnerships from municipalities across the region." https://lnkd.in/gR8A4aes
