Sri Lanka's marine industry is a growing sector with significant potential due to the country's strategic location in the Indian Ocean, rich marine biodiversity, and established maritime traditions. Sri Lankan marine heritage is spreader over ship building and repair, fishing industry, marine tourism, Port Development and shipping, Marine Construction and sustainability Initiatives of the Marine Industry 1. The Chamber of Marine Industry in Sri Lanka The Chamber of Marine Industry Sri Lanka (CMISL) is a non-profit organization dedicated to fostering a favorable business climate for the Sri Lankan marine industry. The aim of the CMISL to create and expand business opportunities in new markets through the dynamic internationalization of the marine sector. By actively integrating into the global economy and improving the institutional and regulatory environment, CMISL facilitates constructive business and government dialogue https://cmisl.lk/ 1. Construction of Breakwater at Kapparathota (Weligama) The Boat building industry which is key component of the marine sector, is an identified focused sector in the National Export Strategy (NES) which could contribute markedly to achieve the national export targets of the country. It proposed development for the purpose of firming up the boat building industry requirements by providing a calm basin for launching of boats at Kapparatota with the proposed breakwater construction.EDB has initiated this programme with the assistance of Ministry of Fisheries. The Feasibility report is finalized in this project and it is in the final stage of Environment Impact Analysis (EIA) 2. Voyage Sri Lanka It is a Marine Summit organized by the Export Services Division, Export Development Board , which is an exclusive summit on the future of the Marine and Offshore and Boat Building. #NYKSM Webinar for Seafarers on Environment and Sustainability We were deeply moved to see the enthusiasm and engagement of NYKSM Officers during our online webinar Environment and Sustainability on October 9th, 2024. Their participation added tremendous value to the event, and it was truly inspiring to witness such a diverse group unite for the common goal of environmental sustainability. The maritime industry stands at a crucial juncture, grappling with the dual challenges of reducing environmental impact and enhancing energy efficiency. This webinar aimed to raise awareness about our compliance procedures with the ever-evolving maritime regulations aimed at reducing GHG emissions, in line with the IMO GHG strategy and EU directives, and aligned with NYK’s target of achieving net zero emissions by 2050. The session also provided an opportunity to familiarize our officers with the NYKSM Standard SEEMP, CII, and the latest EU regulations on the Emission Trading System and Fuel EU Maritime. The enthusiasm and curiosity of our staff were truly commendable, leading to a highly interactive session following the presentation. We extend our heartfelt thanks to all the seafarers, speakers, and delegates who participated with such passion. Ms Lemajic also paid tribute to Shipping Australia’s CEO, Capt. Melwyn Noronha. “Now onto a leadership thought, I was told once by my mentor the true measure of leadership is the ability to positively influence someone whom you’ve never met. Which means our efforts aren’t just confined to the individuals within our immediate reach. By Melwyn asking me to speak today he is championing diversity, equality, and inclusivity and setting an example as a leader, a ripple effect that extends far beyond this room”. Our warmest congratulations to the Singapore Maritime Foundation (SMF) on their 20ᵗʰ anniversary! 🎉🎂 At the event, we are grateful to Acting Minister for Transport Mr Hong Tat Chee Hong Tat for highlighting Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation (GCMD)'s efforts in supporting the industry’s efforts in maritime decarbonisation. “A good example is the Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation (GCMD), which is chaired by Mr Andreas Sohmen-Pao and headed by Professor Lynn Loo.” He said, “This is an industry-led platform with support from MPA, to advance our decarbonisation efforts in partnership with industry players.” 🚢💚 Mr Chee further emphasised the need for more studies and pilots and of which, we are proud to be part of the rich ecosystem in Singapore. “I encourage our companies to leverage on the diverse research ecosystem here, to work with the Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation, and other entities such as the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) Electrification Centre and the Lloyd's Register’s Maritime Decarbonisation Hub, as well as our IHLs like National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University Singapore, to conduct studies and pilot new projects which can contribute to a greener and more sustainable maritime industry.” As Mr Chee acknowledged, there will be challenges and risks and “some of the initial efforts may not succeed, and the results of many of our initiatives will only bear fruit over the longer-term” but he also rightly mentioned “if we see a hazard ahead, we need to take steps now to avoid the hazard and not wait till the hazard is right in front of us before we act.” There is no time to waste.
