Given the extensive coverage by the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism on the importance of user needs, here is a mini-guide for those who wish to understand what they are! In the Digital News Report 2024, released this week, the User Needs Model 2.0, which we developed in collaboration with Dmitry Shishkin, is used to ask news consumers about their expectations from the media. Great report - published Nov 2023 - on conditions challenging rural and regional media in Australia, and "whether there is a possibility that metro-based news outlets might develop more of an appetite for running news and information from the regions". Good to hear the findings so far presented at Journalism Education and Research Association of Australia conference - thanks to Monica Attard, Ayesha Jehangir, and Gary Dickson. Good read on the sad decline of local journalism. The way forward? Decentralise news desks and make the readers the writers, the locals the journalists. The idea of a centralised news desk, local, national or trade, is legacy — and the model unscalable. The only way to generate content that matters at scale is to let it self-generate and dictate its own course. #newsavoidance #journalism #newsmedia #newspublishers #localnews https://lnkd.in/ditBRJNj
