Flashback to day #1 at your current job. Which of these experiences matches yours? A - Received work equipment in advance of my start date. My laptop was set up and ready to go. B - Received work equipment in advance of my start date, but my laptop was NOT set up - took a call with IT on my first day. C - My company ordered my equipment, but it did not arrive before my start date. D - My company lets me use my personal device OR I get to buy a new one locally and expense it. At Hofy, our standard is to deliver a preconfigured laptop 3-8 days before a new starter's first day. Today I hung out with Ethan Brooks He's someone with SERIOUS expertise in newsletters (literally wrote the book on them), but incredibly kind, and humble, and doesn't take himself too seriously. We had an awesome chat today, mostly around playing VERY long-term games. I think one of the most interesting things Ethan shared with me, was the idea that.... ...there are companies out there who will simply throw money at any problem in their way. Much of the time, this is at the detriment of their long-term goals.... ...but this creates a unique opportunity for someone willing to play a different game. By forgoing the shiny paydays that are always presenting themselves, you can build up a truly unique differentiator by cultivating...... Your reputation! We JAMMED out for 2 hours on: - Local newsletters. - Old timey handwork books. - Having your students surpass you. - How he moved 20 times growing up. - Debated if name tags cool or not. - ....and what it was like to write a 300 page book that no one reads! Ethan is kind and curious, and definitely the type of guy I want to spend more time with in Austin! (p.s. if you live in Austin, Ethan has a local newsletter that you need to check out)
