The EQ Movement is Here! In the heart of Charleston, West Virginia, under the bright lights of a stage set for change, a press conference unfolds—a defining moment not just for those gathered, but for countless lives across the state and potentially, the nation. This is the announcement of Project EQ, an ambitious initiative aimed at embedding emotional intelligence at the core of law enforcement training. 🌟Journey of Courage and Truth: My Story of Resilience🌟 At 44, I've found the courage to share a story I've hidden for decades. As one of the twelve girls at the Coke County Juvenile Justice Center in the '90s, my journey has been one of pain, silence, and eventual empowerment. This story isn't just mine. It's about Sara Lowe and many others who suffered in silence. Lured by promises of rehabilitation at Wackenhut's facility, we faced a reality far from what was pledged. Abuse, neglect, and a system that turned a blind eye - this was our truth. I was silenced once with money at 19, but the temporary glamour of wealth quickly faded, leaving me to confront the deeper scars of my experience. The loss of my best friend, who named my daughter, to suicide on the day of our lawsuit victory, was a turning point. It underscored a harsh reality: our fight was never about money; it was about justice and acknowledgment. Today, I stand to tell our story, not just for me but for Sara, who tragically couldn't bear the weight of her unacknowledged pain. It's a reminder that behind every corporate facade, there are human lives at stake. And while those responsible may not have faced consequences, our voices can now be heard. This post is more than a narrative of past woes; it's a call for accountability, change, and the protection of the innocent. Let's ensure no other child endures what we did. So when people think I’m absolutely bananas for saying I want to build a $200 million dollar theme park in Texas question my leverage, here you go. 💅🏼 I don’t think anybody wants me to make a big fuss about this, and I’m not trying to. I’m pretty sure I’m not gonna have any problems getting it done. 🤠 https://lnkd.in/gSd9e_Gi https://lnkd.in/gWFsrNkF #JusticeForSara #SurvivorStory #SpeakUp #Accountability #TexasYouthCommission #Wackenhut #Texas #juvenilejustice #TYC

👏 great step forward for these nine communities! Locking up kids is never the answer. Time to pursue alternative, proven policy solutions.Time to put the wellbeing of children first. Find out more about our evidence-based framework for child wellbeing at www.aracy.org.au
Huge news! We've announced nine communities that will benefit from the largest commitment to justice reinvestment ever delivered by the commonwealth. Justice reinvestment is a long-term, community-led approach to preventing crime, improving community safety and reducing the number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adults and children in custody. It empowers First Nations communities and leaders to develop local solutions to divert people who are at risk away from the criminal justice system. We're committed to working in partnership with communities, because we know lasting change needs to be community-led. This is just one way that we're delivering practical action that makes a difference in Indigenous communities.

My latest column for Police1: a new fellowship program wants more applications from rural law enforcement and corrections officers. You know how your area is damaged by opiate abuse, and you probably have at least one idea for fixing that. The Reaching Rural Initiative exists to help you make that concept a reality.
Thank you Kathleen Dias and Police1 for covering the Reaching Rural Initiative. Reaching Rural Fellow Denise Waff of Prince George County, Virginia did an excellent job sharing the story of how the program has helped her community. https://lnkd.in/e25xZSAA

The I-81 in Syracuse, I-20 in Atlanta, and State Route 40 in Baltimore are just a few examples of how the Interstate Highway System cut through and devastated local Black communities. The structural racism built into these roads have left a legacy of poverty and illness still felt today. However, as many of these highways are now crumbling, cities across the nation have the opportunity to address the historic discrimination built into these roads. To avoid repeating mistakes of the past, the communities nearby must be engaged and bought into the decision making process. https://hubs.la/Q01_b_Dk0 #Infrastructure #EquitableDevelopment #StructuralRacism #CommunityEngagement

Corey Brooks: Rooftop Revelations. ‘Chicago's mayor plans reparations task force. I'm on the South Side and I've got loads of questions The last thing we need is more liberal gaslighting from Mayor Johnson that will only extend the misery of Black people’ I have questions for Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, who is proposing a reparations task force: where are the reparations for all Blacks killed in shootings in my neighborhood and elsewhere in the city? Where are the reparations for the city’s failure to produce adequate protection for its residents? Where are the reparations for the city’s failure to provide adequate schooling to inspire kids toward the American Dream instead of nihilistic violence? And where are the reparations for the city’s woke legal system that puts the interest of violent criminals above the interests of the city’s hardworking citizens?

For the twelve days of Christmas, the ninth of the "twelve studies of note" to read or watch over the holidays. December 2023, from the National Office of Violence Prevention Networks and National Institute for Criminal Justice Reform: Highlights of American Rescue Plan Act Funded Violence Reduction Efforts. "Responding to the urgent need to address gun violence, the White House encouraged jurisdictions across the country to use a portion of their federal American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) allocations to fund violence intervention. The following report provides a snapshot of ARPA funds—including the use, impact, and potential for sustainability—in four jurisdictions: two cities, one county, and one state." The report outlines how communities can sustain these safety programs when the federal funds end. https://ovpnetwork.org/ David Muhammad aqeela sherrills
