Feral pigs? Yep, we study them! In a new study just out in Biological Invasions led by Hallie Fischman and co-authored by Ashley Smyth, we show that feral pigs literally 'pig out' on ribbed mussels in NE Florida salt marshes. And, through their consumption of mussels and trampling of the marsh, these invasive animals are transforming the productivity, sediment capture and nitrogen cycling functions of these intertidal grasslands. Perhaps most alarmingly, we estimate that feral pigs reduce the efficiency of salt marsh sediment capture by 38% and are therefore likely amplifying the vulnerability of coastal wetlands in the region to sea level rise. Do you know where your drinking water comes from? Most of the raw source water Des Moines Water Works treats to make safe for drinking comes from the Raccoon River. Its three forks are a combined 226 miles in length. This tributary flows through farmland and livestock operations before it makes its way to central Iowa, where it meets with the Des Moines River south of downtown. As a result, its water quality is severely diminished, sometimes high in levels of nitrate from upstream nutrients, other times with organic materials, even manure.
