There has to be another way. All of us, through taxes and donations and often our time, help to fund the third sector. How much ‘due diligence’ do you do about where your money goes? A lot of the time the decisions are simply made for us. For example we buy a lottery ticket and the Lottery decides who gets the funding - not us. I want my money to go to where it makes most difference. We make a difference when we make a lasting change. Food parcels, lifts to appointments, short term fixes and advice ARE needed sadly, but just like the system of giving to charity in this country, they make transactional beggars of people. We all deserve better. Working with people over time to build trust and find their own sustainable change instead of having it done for or to them is where I want my money to go. We need a national strategy that will provide the direction and support needed to address: (1) the many forms that homelessness can take - from rough sleeping to sofa surfing to unsafe homes; (2) as well as the specific needs and challenges faced by young people - from the increased likelihood of family breakdown as a cause of homelessness to the decreased likelihood of receiving support from local authorities. We need a national strategy to end youth homelessness.
