This is National Water Safety Month, and while we know all ages love our facility pools and aquatics programs, we are especially proud of our programs that illuminate our vision of equity and access to safety in swimming for our youth. Bayview Safety Swim and Splash not only does this but has brought us together with incredible partners, and support from companies like Amazon. Thank you, Amazon for seeing how community-driven programs not only change lives, and our neighborhoods, but our future as well. #ymcasf #ysf https://ow.ly/11cW50RCglg

Florida is setting the stage for enhancing water safety and ensuring that every child across the state can learn to swim. The recent passage of FL Senate Bill 544 introduces a groundbreaking program aimed at providing free swim lessons to children from low-income families across the state. At least 97 children died by drowning in Florida in 2023, according to the Florida Department of Children and Families. Studies show swim lessons can reduce a child's risk of drowning by 88%. This initiative is about more than just swimming, it's about offering equal opportunities for children to stay safe. https://lnkd.in/eWBXHdW2

If a child is missing, look at the water first! Did you know? 69% of kids who are found in pools weren’t expected to be there. That’s why it's super important to check the pool or any water spot first if you can't find a child. Water safety is everyone's responsibility! Here are a few quick tips to enhance safety for children around water: 1. Constant Supervision: Always keep an eye on children when they are near water, even if they are not swimming. 2. Secure the Area: Ensure pools have proper barriers and gates that children cannot bypass. 3. Educate Early: Teach children about the dangers of water and enroll them in swimming lessons from an early age. Thank you to our friends at Stop Drowning Now for inspiring this post!

Florida's picturesque waters, while inviting, hide a somber reality. Every year, our state witnesses an alarming number of child drownings. In fact, Florida consistently ranks among the top states in the nation for drowning-related deaths in children under the age of five. But here's the staggering truth: most of these tragic events are preventable through swimming lessons. 🏊♂️💔 This is where the "Florida Swims Foundation" steps in. Their mission? To ensure that every child in Florida learns how to swim, building confidence and safety around water. Beyond the obvious life-saving benefits, swimming also boosts self-esteem, promotes physical health, and instills a love for water-centric activities. But, for this wave of change to ripple across the state, we need YOU. 🌟 Support this vital cause by pre-ordering the "Swim for Life" license plate. Not only will your vehicle sport a meaningful design, but your contribution will directly fuel efforts to transform these heartbreaking statistics. Together, let's ensure every splash in Florida is one of joy, not tragedy. #FSPA #FloridaSwimsFoundation #365Pools #Spacecoast

Loria Yeadon modeling that just because you may not have had access to something in the past, doesn’t mean that you have to let guilt, shame, or any other emotion keep you from taking the plunge when that sea of opportunity opens up. Whether it’s swimming (or financial strategy/estate planning 😉) take a deep breath and dive on in with a trusted coach/instructor/advisor. #BreakingBarriers #GenerationalShifts
CEO - YMCA of Greater Seattle • Equity and Justice Leader • Board Member • Patent Attorney • Engineer
Growing up in a small, rural town without a YMCA, where pools weren’t accessible, our family’s approach to water safety, like many families of color, was to fear the water. At the Y, we are committed to making water safety and aquatics activities accessible and fun for everyone. I learned to swim when I became CEO of the YMCA of Greater Seattle in 2019. Although I recall being filled with trepidation and fear before my first swim lesson, I eventually became one with the water through my lessons at the YMCA. The reality is when parents don’t learn to swim, their kids are only 13% likely to learn. As part of National Water Safety Month, the Y encourages parents to take the plunge, learn to swim, and register your youth and family members for Y swim lessons and water safety classes. Register for swim lessons here: https://lnkd.in/gUvqsffg To learn more about how and why I learned to swim at age 56, watch the video below. #watersafetyforall #nationalwatersafetymonth

🛑 RISK ALERT: As summer kicks off, many are opening pools or heading to the beach. For some, it's the first swim of the season, especially for younger children. Despite the fun, it's crucial to be aware of the risks and prepare for safety. Drownings are on the rise, with nearly 5,000 deaths annually, and they are the leading cause of death for children aged 1-4 (CDC). Basic swimming and water safety skills are critical in preventing drownings. Organizations like the American Red Cross, local YMCAs, and USA Swimming offer affordable or free lessons. First aid and CPR training are also essential in preventing pool accidents. Let's ensure a safe and enjoyable summer for all! #VeritaRiskAdvisory #WaterSafety #VeritaRiskAlert
