YMCA Canada attended #FCM2024AC's Trade Show last week. We met with 177 municipal officials from coast to coast to discuss how YMCAs can support in building stronger communities for the future. We look forward to continuing to engage with municipalities across the country to find local solutions.

Four provocations for Auckland to thrive in adversity We recently co-hosted a session with Auckland Foundation featuring Simon Bridges, CEO of the Auckland Business Chamber and former New Zealand Opposition Leader, where he discussed what he is seeing in Auckland. Simon provided insights on Auckland's future, discussed the election debates in the context of Auckland, and highlighted some of the opportunities for our largest city. We also presented four provocations for building local philanthropy for community care and connection in Tāmaki Makaurau, which we set out in this post and the next for further comments - and for possible reflection as to parallel provocations in other regions. Provocation 1: Irrespective of who governs from Wellington those in Auckland are expecting too much of central government in its ability to lever change for Auckland through policy and budget allocations in our current fiscally constrained environment. Provocation 2: On the brink of a polycrisis the challenges facing Aotearoa New Zealand are complex and multi-dimensional. In the future to be able to respond to environmental disasters and support local communities to flourish central government needs to further devolve its power to local regions, cities, and iwi/ Māori organisations. #philanthropy #purpose #sharedvalue #communityinvesting Auckland Foundation Ian Short Melody Mobsby Tim Kay Shamal Dass Simon Bridges

Advocacy and Communication Coordinator at CARE in #Somalia I have done comms work in #Zimbabwe #South Sudan #Yemen. COMMUNICATION IS AID!
Branding and Marking guidelines, visibility plan etc Most donors have these requirements and they want to see their logo on almost everything. How do we balance between visibility and maintaining the dignity of the communities we serve. Interesting article on the logo race from the #NewHumanitarian. Food for thought!

Welcome to The November Edition of Public Sector Leaders, brought to you by Topco Media! In his letter penned to the nation on October 30, His Excellency, Hon. Cyril Ramaphosa focused on the Springbok Rugby World Cup Victory at the Stade de France and the symbolism of this achievement, “ “The journey of the Springboks to the historic victory in the 2023 Rugby World Cup is as much about our journey towards nationhood as it is about sporting excellence.” Our main theme for this month’s edition is Industrialisation in Africa. Our cover celebrates African excellence and the tremendous work done by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), headed by CEO Dr Thulani Dlamini, Cert. Dir.. Public Sector Leaders takes a deep dive into what’s currently happening around the continent with a feature article on Mapping Industrialisation in Africa, whilst closer to home we look at the Industrial Development Zones( IDZs) in South Africa and the important role they play in terms of growing a self-reliant economy. Speaking of the economy, this edition includes highlights from the Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement, delivered by Hon. Godongwana, whilst in Financial Fitness we shine a light on the benefits of going green in your home. Our Woman in Leadership is the Western Cape Minister of Health and Wellness, Dr Nomafrench Mbombo and our Trailblazer is Dr Duncan Pieterse, the new Director-General for Treasury. In other news, we take a look at South Africa’s ambitious green hydrogen boost with Dutch and Danish collaboration and our Legal Matters feature discusses identity theft and safeguarding your online presence. Whether you are in the public sector, the private sector, supply chain or an interested individual, PSL has something for you. Extremely frustrating that both the devolved Governments of Scotland and Wales have decided not to pass on the full business rates relief announced by the Chancellor in his Autumn Statement for 2024. Recognising the invaluable contribution of pubs in high streets and communities across the UK, it provides vital support for many licensees via a 75% business rates relief to allow pubs across the country to weather the exceptional trading pressures that they are facing. Our members pubs across the whole of the UK are facing exceptional trading pressures through high energy bills, food & drink bills having risen by 40% over the last 24 months and rising staff costs. These short-term pressures are threatening the viability of many pubs and also holding back vital investment that would drive further growth in the sector. The early notice of business rates relief for 2024 is a vital element of a package of investment in pubs that is critical to unlock their full potential. Our nations pubs hold a unique place in all our communities providing a welcoming and accessible place for all, supporting vital skilled local employment and suppliers, in addition to being at the heart of economic growth. We would ask the Scottish and Welsh Governments to urgently re-evaluate their decisions and provide the full level of business rates The Scottish Government Llywodraeth Cymru / Welsh Government #MyPub #HeartoftheCommunity BII

Another gem from Kevin L. Brown. Pls give it a read. Bilats, multilaterals, and the biggest international INGOs (ESPECIALLY) should be thinking about whether their branding may be causing more harm than good in the countries where they work. In addition to the inefficiencies, indignities, and poverty porn that Brown points out, it crowds out/big-foots local organizations - the groups that have the best knowledge of the situation on the ground - that are more often than not - treated like vendors or second class citizens in the aid ecosystem. Shouldn't we all be in this business to shift the power to the experts on the ground who know how best to solve their own problems? Check out Pledge for Change that is working to re-imagine the role of INGOs in the global humanitarian and development aid system to build a stronger aid ecosystem based on the principles of solidarity, humility, self-determination, and equality. www.pledgeforchange.org #shiftthepower #decolonization #Localization #pledgeforchange Kate Moger Randi Davis Linda Maguire Blaine Sergew Abby Spring Rachel Huguet @Joy Portella Joy E. Empathy, courage, and heart are essential qualities for any kind of change. Without empathy, we cannot understand the struggles of others and therefore, fail to take action. It takes courage to step out of our comfort zone and make a difference, especially when it comes to challenging societal norms. And most importantly, change starts from the heart - a genuine desire to bring about positive impact in the world. Even though small changes may seem insignificant, they have the power to create a ripple effect and eventually lead to bigger transformations. Every act of kindness and empathy towards one another can spark a chain reaction that brings about meaningful change in our society. #ThePowerofOne #Empathy #Collaboration #Innovation #Achievement
This reason for community sponsorship involves personal growth and courage. That's what volunteers involved in community sponsorship have in common; the courage to drive positive global and local change. Be brave and do good in your community by forming a group to welcome and support refugee newcomers. MTC Australia #100groups100days #CommunitySponsorship #RefugeeWelcome
